25th Jan - National Voters' Day...

Government of India has decided to celebrate January 25th every year as "National Voters' Day", in order to encourage more young voters to take part in the political process.

As part of the Voters' Day celebrations, new voters of 18 years and more will be enrolled in all the polling station areas in the country. They will be handed over the Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) at felicitations to be organised in the polling station areas. A badge, with a logo and slogan "Proud to be a voter - Ready to vote," will also be given to the new voters, the release added. In 1988, the constitution was amended to lower the voting age from 21 years to 18 years.

It is aimed to provide the unrepresented youth of the country an opportunity to give vent to their feelings and help them become a part of the political process. It has been noticed that the new voters, of 18 years and just above, are not getting enrolled in the electoral rolls in a big way year after year and in certain cases, the level of their enrollment is as low as 20 to 25 percent. In this context, the Election Commission has decided to take up a vigorous exercise to identify all eligible voters attaining the age of 18 years on Jan 1st every year, in all the 8.5 lakh polling station areas of the country.

Such eligible voters would be enrolled on time and handed over their Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) on 25th January every year and this initiative is expected to give the youth a sense of responsible citizenship, empowerment, pride and participation, and inspire them to exercise their newly acquired franchise, when occasion arises.

Google is shutting down the last remnants of Google Buzz to focus on Google+, the company announced on Friday, 14th Oct'11.

“In a few weeks we’ll shut down Google Buzz and the Buzz API, and focus instead on Google+,” Bradley Horowitz, Google’s vice president of product, wrote on The Official Google Blog. “While people obviously won’t be able to create new posts after that, they will be able to view their existing content on their Google Profile, and download it using Google Takeout.”

In addition, Google is shuttering Code Search on 15th Jan 2012 and other social media offerings, including the Twitter-like Jaiku — which will also be discontinued on that date — and iGoogle’s social features. As previously announced, Google Labs will also shut down.

Launched in February 2010, Google Buzz was initially seen as a threat to Twitter and Facebook, but never lived up to its promise, becoming one of the biggest flops of the year. It is likely that Buzz will be viewed as a forerunner to Google+, which had a stronger start, hitting 40 million users in its first three months, according to Google CEO Larry Page.

Greetings…

One year for a One Hundred year company... my journey with the BIG BLUE - IBM; which started on 10th August 2010 (Tue) and is concluding today i.e. on 03rd August 2011 (Wed). During this tenure of 12 months (ofcourse, a week less but not a weak and not less) working for IBM, I (Srikanth Gadwal) worked as a Problem Manager for DiaGeo (DG), British Gas (BG) and Pooled (PMP3) accounts; a memorable, fruitful, joyful and successful journey. IBM did help me to 'Think' in a 'Smarter' way…

And yes, it was never boring, infact quite challenging (not quiet though); as I had the company of yours/IBMERs in this Company/IBM all the way. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your association during the time I spent here at IBM, learnt many things for life while earned to live. Each one of you at IBM has been so special and contributed in specific to my growth and development; and a mention of few names is definitely not viable as the list is not small. But, true to my heart, I am thankful to everyone of you. While I have been here; I got the respect and your never ending love and support… and am honored and blessed to receive your guidance and regards. Thank you all.

Being a Problem Manager here, dealing with problems to drive towards their root cause and resolution has been a part of my role and I hope this learning would definitely help me in managing problems outside IBM as well J For now, I (with Emp ID: 04963G) would like to send you one last email today on 03 AUG 2011. It seems that this association meant to end with 3G speed... :)

Yes… yes, I have been called a STUPID (Super Talented Unique Person In Demand !) and a FOOL (Freak Of One Liners !) too… :) But then, I take them all as equal as your appreciations and compliments. Well, it is in my blood (group B+ve) which always reminds me to ‘Be Positive’. I miss you people (atleast for now) and would definitely return to IBM, if it is written again. Now, please check this out:

A humble proposal… “Will you please marry me?” = “4 3 6 5 2?” (counting the letters in each word respectively).

A statement which actually forms the base for a long and strong relation in life… includes a sequence in itself… (jumbled 2 3 4 5 6) for a positive answer of ‘S’ (YES), a 1 letter word. And definitely not for a negative answer of ‘NO’ (i.e. 2 / two letter word).

Now, considering the above; we see that the letter S is assigned 19, (1+9 = 10 / 1+0 = 1) and letters N and O (which make NO) have 14 and 15 respectively, (14+15 = 29 / 2+9 = 11 / 1+1 = 2).

Hence, we need ‘1’ to make a sequence of ‘2 3 4 5 6’, a complete (successive) progression and so a successful relation. And an answer of 2 (NO), may make the person who proposes, just a 2 (just ‘me’) for life instead of being ‘we’… sometimes (if there has been ‘1 4 3’ (I Love You) earlier… in that relation) because, Fevicol might fix any broken thing… but not a broken heart.

Well, seems to be an unlikely coincidence with numbers; a strange fact in life… :)

Teachers’ Day in India is celebrated on September 5^th of every year to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was the first Vice President of India (1952-1962), and the second President of India (1962-1967). Radhakrishnan was one of India's most acclaimed scholars of comparative religion and philosophy. He is considered through his efforts to have built a bridge between East and West by having shown the philosophical systems of each tradition to be comprehensible within the terms of the other. He wrote authoritative exegesis/journal of India's religious and philosophical literature for the English speaking world.

When he became President, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, September 5th. He replied, "Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if 5th September is observed as Teachers' Day". His birthday has since been celebrated as Teachers' Day in India. Teachers’ Day is also celebrated in various other countries across the world on various dates, a day which is intended to be a special day for the appreciation of teachers. Also, World Teachers' Day is held annually on 5th October since 1994 to commemorate teachers’ organizations worldwide.

Its aim is to mobilize support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers. According to UNESCO, World Teachers' Day represents a significant token of the awareness, understanding and appreciation displayed for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development. Education International (EI), the global union federation that represents education professionals worldwide, strongly believes that World Teachers' Day should be internationally recognized and celebrated around the world. Every year, EI launches a public awareness campaign to highlight the contributions of the teaching profession.

On this day, students show their appreciation to the teachers by wishing them and presenting the gifts including cards and flowers. Also, at some schools/institutions on this day, the responsibility of teaching is taken up by the senior students as an appreciation for their teachers.

Krishna Janmashtami, also known as "Krishnashtami", "Gokulashtami", "Srikrishna Jayanti" or sometimes merely as "Janmashtami", is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, an incarnation/avatar of God Vishnu. Janmashtami is observed on the eighth day, Ashtami tithi, of the dark half or Krishna Paksha of the month of Bhaadrapada (the sixth month) in the Hindu calendar, when the Rohini Nakshatra (western star name: Aldebaran) is ascendant.

The festival falls between August mid and September mid months of the Gregorian calendar. The ritual performed on this occasion is to fast the previous day (Saptami, seventh day), which is followed by a night-long vigil commemorating the birth of Krishna at midnight. At midnight, the deity of the infant Krishna is bathed, placed in a cradle and worshipped. The fast is completed after Aarti, a special prayer. In the early morning, women draw patterns of little children's feet outside the house with rice-flour paste, walking towards the house. This symbolizes the entry of the infant Krishna into his foster-home. This is performed to recreate incidents from the life of Krishna and commemorate his love for people.

Sometimes, Janmashtami is celebrated for over two days as “Rohini” nakshatra and Ashtami may not fall on the same day. The first day known as Krishnashtami, as the birth of Bhagawan/Lord Krishna falls on the eighth day after Raksha Bandhan, and the second day is known as Kalashtami.

Special programs and events are conducted in regions of Mathura and Vrindavan on this day. Mathura is reputed to be the birthplace of Krishna. While the Rasa Lila or dramatic enactments of the life of Krishna, recreates the youthful Krishna's day; Govinda, an event in which teams of young men form human pyramids to reach a pot, that is positioned at a convenient height, and break it. The topmost person on the human pyramid reaches and breaks the Dahi Handi (a clay pot filled with buttermilk) and when that happens, the buttermilk is spilled over the entire group, symbolizing their achievement through unity. The festival is thus celebrated with great joy and communal togetherness by one and all.

Greetings…

Gone in Seventy months... Not a beginning of any new movie or a sequel, but an ending of a great association; which started on 11th October 2004 (Mon) and is concluding today i.e. on 06th August 2010 (Fri). During this tenure of 70 months working for HP, I (Srikanth Gadwal) grew from a Trainee Technical Support Engineer at GSCB to a Global TCE & Quality Analyst for all GSCs; a memorable, fruitful and successful journey. HP has been ‘A Road To Success’…

And yes, it was never boring as I had the company of yours/HP (Happy People) in this Company/HP (Hewlett Packard) all the way. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your association during the time I spent here at HP, learnt many things for life while earned to live. Each one of you at HP has been so special and contributed in specific to my growth and development; and a mention of few names is definitely not viable as the list is as big as the Petronas Towers (Yes, one of my cherishable moments at HP – visiting those towers as an MVC/Most Valuable Contributor :)). But, true to my heart, I am thankful to everyone of you. When I revealed to you people about my resignation for HP, after close to six (6) years, getting relieved on this 6th of August, the following are some of the responses –

* Boy, I’ll miss you…/I will seriously miss u like crazyyy…

Being an Analyst of Quality (Quality Analyst :)) for most part of my tenure, observing and analyzing has become a part of my life now and owing to this… here is a bit/bite of it before bowing out… I never had a clue of my date of joining (DOJ) in HP in advance until I joined… but probably my last working day (LWD) was decided well before and was with me all along as my… Employee ID – 20105315. Yes… reading it in the format of YYYYMMDD and rounding the numbers to single digits will tell you the fact… (YYYY-MM-DD -> 2010-53-15 -> 2010 (year)-08 (5+3)-06 (1+5) -> 06th August 2010). Hmm, a strange coincidence… might not be applicable to others… :)

Yes… yes, I have been called a STUPID (Super Talented Unique Person In Demand !) and a FOOL (Freak Of One Liners !) too… J But then, I take them all as equal as your appreciations and compliments. Well, it is in my blood (group B+ve) which always reminds me to ‘Be Positive’. I miss you people (atleast for now) and would definitely return to HP, if it is written again… might be as a MAN-AGE-R (a MAN who by AGE gains R/Respect in every aspect). నా మదిలో తొలుస్తున్న ప్రశ్న, ఇలా నా పదాలలో...
వితండవాదం అంటే?

Birth days కి, Marriage days కి, New Year day కి, Valentine's day కి; అర్ధరాత్రి 12 వరకు కళ్ళు వాచేలా, కాయలు కాచేలా ఎదురు చూచే మనం/జనం; ఏడాదిలో ఏదో ఒక సాధారణ రోజు అదే logic ని ఒక్కసారి గుర్తుచేసి; రాత్రి 12 తరువాత తేది మారుతుంది కదా అని అడగడం... వితండమా?

కని, పెంచి, 20 ఏళ్ళు మన కట్ డ్రాయర్ తో సహా అన్నీ కొనిచ్చారని; మన మనసును కష్టపెట్టుకొని కళ్ళుమూసుకొని కన్నవాళ్ళు చూపించిన వారిని కట్టుకోవడం, నేరం అని ఆలోచించడం... వితండమా?

ఇతరుల సంతోషం కోసం పెళ్ళి చేసుకోవడం ఎంతవరకు సబబు? Parents ఉంటారు, పిల్లలు వస్తారు... కాని, Parents లేనప్పుడు వారి స్థానం తీసుకొని లాలించి, మనకు పిల్లలని కలిగించి మనలని పరిపూర్ణులను చేసే లైఫ్ 'Partner’ కి Priority ఇవ్వాలి, అని అనడం... వితండమా?
అసలు తల్లిదండ్రుల ప్రేమకి, జీవిత భాగస్వామి ప్రేమకి ఎందుకు పోలిక?
Is it not true that, marriage provides the most possible long relationship in life (barring all odds)??

Friendship కి అడ్డురాని జాతకాలు, Relationship కి ఎందుకు? స్నేహంగా వికసించి, ప్రేమగా పుష్పించి, పెళ్ళిగా ఫలించే బంధం... ఆ సంబంధానికి మనసులు కలిస్తే చాలు జాతకాలు కాదు అని అనడం... వితండమా?

అనుకూలతలను ఆలోచించకుండా, దేవుడు కొలువున్న నెలవు లోనే మనువు అనే 'శుభకార్యం' జరగాలి అని అన్నప్పుడు, ఆ తరువాత జరిగే 'సృష్టి కార్యం' అక్కడే జరుగకూడదా అని ఒక్కసారి అడగడం... వితండమా?
సప్తగిరుల ప్రయాణం కన్నా సప్తపదుల పయనం గొప్పది కదా.

సామాన్య మనిషి అవకాశవాది, లాభం లేకుండా ఏ పని చేయడు అని అంటున్నారు ఇప్పుడు. మానవత్వం ఇప్పుడు ఇదే ఐతే... దైవత్వం ఏమిటి? పూజలు, అభిషేకాలు, వ్రతాలు, నైవేద్యాలు లేకుండా దేవుడు కనికరించడు అంటే (హాస్యాస్పదం?)... ఇక దేవునికి, మనిషికి ఏంటి తేడా? ప్రతి మనిషిలో దేవుణ్ణి చూడాలని అంటారు... కాని ప్రతి దేవునిలోను ఇప్పటి మనిషే ఉన్నాడా? వస్తు సమర్పణలు లేకుండా మదినే దేవునికి అర్పిస్తే దేవుడు/దేవత కనికరించరా... అని అడగడం, వితండమా?

మనీ ఉంటుంది, పోతుంది... మళ్ళీ వస్తుంది. కాని మనుషులు ఉంటారు, పోతే... తిరిగి రారు. ధనాన్ని సంపాదించడం కన్నా, జనాన్ని సంపాదించడం ముఖ్యం, అని ఆలోచించడం... వితండమా?

Ofcourse, ఈ పైన చెప్పిన ఉదాహరణలను చదివిన వారిలో చాలామంది కూడా వ్రాసినవాడు కచ్చితంగా 'వితండవాది, మూర్ఖుడు, స్టుపిడ్, ఫూల్ (ఏప్రిల్ లోనే కాదు, ఏ నెలలో ఐనా)' అని అనుకోవచ్చు. అందుకు కారణం, వారి దగ్గర ఈ ప్రశ్నకు సమాధానం లేక, ఇచ్చే తీరిక లేక, చెప్పే ఓపిక లేక, సంగతి అర్ధంకాలేక... మరేదైనా కావచ్చు. లేదా...
"తివిరి ఇసుమున తైలమ్ము తీయవచ్చు,
దవిలి మృగతృష్ణలో నీరు తాగవచ్చు,
తిరిగి కుందేటి కొమ్ము సాధించవచ్చు,
చేరి మూర్ఖుని మనసు రంజింపరాదు..."
అని చిన్నప్పుడు చదువుకున్న మంచిని గుర్తుచేసుకొని ఉండవచ్చు. కాని, ఆ పద్యపు ఆఖరి పాదాన్ని ఇక్కడ ఆపాదించే ముందు, ఇచ్చిన ఉదాహరణలు మొదటి మూడు పాదాలలో చెప్పినట్టివేనా అని ఒక్కసారి ఆలోచిస్తారుగా…

మనిషికి ఉండవలసిన ఓర్పు, నేర్పు, కూర్పు, మార్పు... ఎందుకవుతున్నాయి మరుపు? ఇది కాదా మనుగడకు చెరుపు? However; ఇది చెప్పినా, ఇన్ని వ్రాసినా; మానవత్వానికి నేను అతీతుణ్ణేమి కాదు, అంత హితుణ్ణేమి కాదు. సాధారణ మనిషినే... అయినా, వితండవాదినైన మాత్రాన నేను మనిషిని కాదా? నాకు మనసు ఉండదా? ఉండకూడదా?

Christmas, also referred to as Christmas Day or Christmastide, is an annual holiday celebrated on December 25th that marks and honors the birth of Jesus of Nazareth (Nazareth was the home of Joseph and Mary and where Jesus grew up from some point in his childhood). Christmastide or Christmas season tends to be defined as the period from Christmas Day to the evening of 5th January, the day before Epiphany (Feast Day). The Feast of the Epiphany falls on January 6th. This period is also commonly known as the Twelve Days of Christmas, as referred to in the Christmas carol of the same name, or Yuletide.

The word Christmas originated as a compound meaning "Christ's mass". It is derived from the Middle English ‘Christemasse’ and Old English ‘Cristes maesse’. "Cristes" is from Greek Christos (Christ's) and "maesse" is from Latin missa (mass). In early Greek versions of the New Testament, the letter Χ (chi), is the first letter of Christ. Since the mid-16th Century, Χ or the similar Roman letter X, has been used as an abbreviation for Christ. Hence, Xmas is often used as an abbreviation for Christmas. Christmas is celebrated throughout the Christian population, but is also celebrated by many non-Christians as a secular, cultural festival. The holiday is widely celebrated around the world, including in the United States of America (USA), where it is celebrated by 96% of the population.

Boxing Day is a public holiday in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, as well as many other members of the Commonwealth of Nations and Greece. It is based on the tradition of giving gifts to the less fortunate members of society. Contemporary Boxing Day in Canada is a "shopping holiday" associated with after Christmas sales. It is usually celebrated on 26th of December, the day after Christmas Day. Boxing Day dates back to the century in which the primary practice of giving gifts to employees or to people in a lower social class.

A Christmas box is, in English tradition, a clay box used in artisan shops. Apprentices, masters, visitors, customers and others would put donations of money into the box, like a piggy bank, and then, after Christmas, the box would be shattered and all the contents shared among the workers of the shop. Thus, masters and customers could donate bonuses to the workers anonymously, and the employees could average their wages. The habit of breaking the Christmas box lent its name to 'Boxing Day'. The term "Christmas box" now refers generally to a gift or pay bonus given to workers. It is the day when people would give a present or Christmas box to those who has worked for them throughout the year.

Advocates' day is celebrated in India by the lawyer community on the 3rd of December to mark the birth anniversary of Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the First President of India and a very eminent lawyer himself. Advocates' Day brings together labor officials, labor representatives, public and private sector managers, management representatives and labor relations neutrals from across the States and Territories to hear national and regional speakers addressing the key issues of the day. Dr. Rajendra Prasad (December 3, 1884 – February 28, 1963) was the first President of Independent India. He was an independence activist and as a leader of the Congress Party, played a prominent role in the Indian Independence Movement. He served as President of the Constituent Assembly that drafted the constitution of the Republic from 1948 to 1950. He had also served as a Cabinet Minister briefly in the first Government of Independent India.

He was born in Zeradei, in the Siwan district of Bihar near Chapra. His father, Mahadev Sahai, was a Persian and Sanskrit language scholar; his mother, Kamleshwari Devi, was a devout lady. He was married at the age of 12 to Rajvanshi Devi. His dauntless determination towards the service of nation impressed many prominent leaders of his genre who came under his tutelage. He passed in 1915 with a Gold medal in Masters in Law examination with honors and went on to complete his Doctorate in Law. Dr. Rajendra Prasad used to practice his Law and studies in Bhagalpur (Bihar), and was a very popular and eminent figure over there during that ceremonious era. Rajendra Prasad was greatly moved by the dedication, courage and conviction of Mahatma Gandhi and he quit as a Senator of the University in 1921 and was drawn into the Indian freedom struggle.

He was elected as the President of Indian National Congress during the Bombay session in October 1934 and took active role in meeting its objectives. After India became independent he was elected as the President of India. As the first President, he was independent and unwilling to allow the Prime Minister or the party to usurp his constitutional prerogatives. However, following the tussle over the enactment of the Hindu Code Bill, he moderated his stance. He set several important precedents for later Presidents to follow. In 1962, after 12 years as President, he announced his decision to retire and was Succeeded by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was subsequently awarded the 'Bharat Ratna', the nation's highest civilian award in 1962, the order which was established by himself, on January 2nd, 1954. Advocates' day is observed in India to commemorate his birthday.

Bakriid or Id-ul-Zuha/Id-ul-Adha is one of the most celebrated festivals among Muslims all over the world. It is a day of sacrifice for the Muslims. The festival of sacrifice, when the Muslims of all over, sacrifice 'Bakri' (goat), is observed to commemorate the great sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim who was so devoted, faithful and obedient to God's will that he unhesitatingly agreed to sacrifice his only son Ismail at the behest of God.

Id-ul-Adha means 'Festival of Sacrifice' or 'Greater Eid', a holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail as an act of obedience to God. It annually falls on the tenth (10th) day of the month 'Dhu-al-Hijjah' of the lunar Islamic calendar. The festivities last for three days or more depending on the country/region of observance. It occurs the day after the pilgrims conducting Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia by Muslims worldwide, descend from Mount Arafat. It is the latter of two Eid/Id festivals celebrated by Muslims, whose basis comes from the Quran. Like Eid al-Fitr (Ramzan/Ramadan), Eid al-Adha (Bakrid/Bakriid) begins with a short prayer followed by a sermon and with observances such as prayers, sacrificing a goat, sheep, cow or a camel and gifting to acquaintance and poor people.

According to legends, it all started with a dream in which Allah directed the patriarch Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ismail. It is said that it was to test him that Allah asked him to sacrifice his son on the altar at the mount of Mina near Mecca. Ibrahim, moved by his paternal feelings and yet determined to follow Allah's instructions blindfolded himself before sacrificing his son and only removed the blindfold after performing the act. When he opened his eyes, he found his son alive and smiling to his great joy. On the altar, a slaughtered lamb was seen instead. It was Ibrahim's faith in God/Allah and his son's faith in his father that were on test. The festival is to celebrate the strong faith of those devoted to Islam.

The festival coincides with the anniversary of the day when 'Quran' (the Holy book of Islam) was declared complete. It is from when many Muslims undertake Haj pilgrimage to Mecca and people offer prayers in mosques. On the day of Id, the pilgrims reach the grounds of Mina where they offer special prayers. Special delicacies and sweets are prepared on the occasion and are distributed after the Eid prayers to the family and friends. According to the Quranic text, the sacrifice of Abraham marked the end of the human sacrifices for the Semitic (Arabic) race and that surrendering one's will and purpose completely and unconditionally is the only sacrifice that Allah requires.

In India, Children's Day is celebrated on November 14th every year. This date marks the birth anniversary of independent India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as he was very fond of children. Children's day is celebrated on this day in recognition of his lifelong passion and work for children. Jawaharlal Nehru (14th November 1889 – 27th May 1964) was a major political leader of the Congress Party, a pivotal figure in the Indian independence movement and the first and one of the longest-serving prime ministers of the Republic of India. He is popularly referred to as Panditji (Scholar) and Pandit Nehru. Since childhood, Nehru and his sisters; Vijaya Lakshmi and Krishna; lived in a large mansion called Anand Bhavan in Allahabad, and were raised with English customs, mannerisms and dressing. While learning Hindi and Sanskrit, they would be trained to converse fluently and regularly in English. Jawaharlal Nehru was a passionate advocate of education for India's children and youth, believing it essential for India's future progress.

As India's first Prime minister and external affairs minister, Jawaharlal Nehru played a major role in shaping modern India's government and political culture along with sound foreign policy. He is praised for creating a system providing universal primary education, reaching children in the farthest corners of rural India. Nehru's education policy is also credited for the development of world-class educational institutions such as the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), the National Institutes of Technology (NIT) and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM). Numerous public institutions and memorials across India are dedicated to Nehru's memory. The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) are among the most prestigious universities in India.

Nehru is credited for establishing a widespread system of affirmative action to provide equal opportunities and rights for India's ethnic groups, minorities, women, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. Nehru's passion for egalitarianism meant that he put the state to work, to try and end widespread practices of discrimination against women and depressed classes, though with limited success in his lifetime. Nehru was hailed by many for working to defuse global tensions and the threat of nuclear weapons.

In his lifetime, Jawaharlal Nehru enjoyed an iconic status in India and was widely admired across the world for his idealism and statesmanship. His birthday, 14th November, is celebrated in India as Children's Day in recognition of his strong passion and work for the welfare, education and development of children and young people. Children across India are taught to remember him as ‘Chacha’ Nehru (Uncle Nehru). Nehru remains a popular symbol of the Congress party which frequently celebrates his memory. Congress leaders and activists often emulate his style of clothing, especially the ‘Gandhi cap’, and his mannerisms. Nehru's personal preference for the ‘Sherwani’ ensured that it continues to be considered formal wear in North India today; the ‘Nehru jacket’ is named in his honour due to his preference for that style.

In 1951, he was nominated for the ‘Nobel Peace Prize’ by the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC). Nehru is also known for his famous works in the field of literature such as 'The Discovery of India', 'Glimpses of World History' and the inspiring 'Letters from a Father to His Daughter', a collection of 30 letters written by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1928 to his daughter Indira Gandhi when she was 10 years old, teaching about natural history and the story of civilizations. In 1954 the United Nations General Assembly suggested that all nations should observe a ‘Universal Children's Day’ as a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children and of activity promoting the welfare of the world's children. The date of 20th November marks the day in 1959 when the Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989, and is often the day chosen by countries as their own designated day to observe Universal Children's Day. However, Children's Day is religiously celebrated in different countries on different dates with same significance and objective.

The day (November 14th) also marks World Diabetes Day. World Diabetes Day is the primary global awareness campaign of the diabetes world. It was introduced in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to the alarming rise of diabetes complaints around the world. World Diabetes Day, held on November 14th every year, is a campaign that features a new theme chosen by the International Diabetes Federation each year to address issues facing the global diabetes community, that lasts the whole year. This marks the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, first conceived the idea which led to the discovery of insulin in the year 1922.

A very happy, honoring and joyful State Formation Day wishes (01/11/09).

This is applicable to all the four South Indian states (AP, KN, KE, TN) and also MP, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana (1966) and Chhattisgarh (2000). The criterion for formation of Indian States is Language. The formation of linguistic states is the single most important event in the history of South Indian languages, as it provided an opportunity for these languages to develop independently, each of them having a state to support.

At the time of British rule and prior to independence all the current south Indian states were known as Madras State (Madras Presidency, also known as Madras Province) as a whole entity. Madras made a significant contribution to the freedom movement in the early decades of the 20th century. Madras was the first province in British India where the system of dyarchy (or Diarchy, a form of government where power is shared between two joint authorities) was first implemented. The Presidency was dissolved when India became independent on August 15th, 1947. On January 26th, 1950, when the Republic of India was inaugurated, Madras was admitted as one of the states of the Indian Union. India became a Republic in the year 1950 and in same year linguistic provinces were formed.

On November 1st, 1956; Andhra Pradesh (AP) was formed with Hyderabad as its capital. Kerala (KE) and Karnataka (KN/Karunadu) states were formed on the same day, getting separated from Madras state. In 1968, Madras State was renamed Tamil Nadu (TN), meaning Land of Tamil. The name of the Mysore State was changed to Karnataka on November 1st, 1973. Madhya Pradesh (abbreviated as MP, meaning ‘Middle Province’), often called the Heart of India, is a state in central India. Its capital is Bhopal. Madhya Pradesh was originally the largest state in India (now, Rajasthan) when formed on November 1st, 1956 until November 1st, 2000 when the state of Chhattisgarh was carved out. Chhattisgarh was formed on November 1st, 2000 with Raipur as its capital. Rajasthan was formed from erstwhile province known as Rajputana which was merged into the Dominion of India. It encompasses most of the area of the large, inhospitable Great Indian Desert or Thar Desert. Jaipur, also popularly known as the Pink City, is the capital of Rajasthan.

Punjab (means 'Land of Five Rivers') in India, historically forms a part of the larger Punjab region, which includes the Pakistani province of Punjab and the North-West Frontier Province, the Indian states of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, parts of Jammu and Kashmir and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. Punjab is considered to have the best infrastructure in India; this includes road, rail, air and river transport links that are extensive throughout the region. Also, it has the lowest poverty rate and the lowest level of hunger in India. Haryana was administered as a part of the Punjab province of British India, and was later carved out as a separate state on linguistic lines on November 1st, 1966. The name Haryana means ‘The Abode of God’ in Sanskrit. Haryana was the cradle of the Indus Valley and Vedic Civilizations.

Most of the states in India are formed/established in the month of November over the years. Officially, the new states formed/born on November 1st celebrate this day every year as birthday of the state. This is popularly called as Rajyotsava/Rashtravatarana day. Rajyotsava means "State festival" and Rashtravatarana means "State formation".

Deepavali, or Diwali, is a major Indian festival, and a significant festival in Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism. Many legends are associated with Diwali. It is celebrated by people across the globe as the "Festival of Lights", where the lights or lamps signify victory of good over the evil within every human being. The festival is also celebrated by Buddhists. While Deepavali is popularly known as the "festival of lights", the most significant spiritual meaning is "the awareness of the inner light". The word "Diwali" is a modification of the Sanskrit word "Deepavali". 'Deepa' means "light of the dharma", and 'avali' means "a continuous line". The more literal translation is "rows of clay lamps". Firecrackers and fireworks are popular on the eve of Diwali. Central to Hindu philosophy is the assertion that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the ‘Atman’. Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Deepavali is the celebration of this Inner Light, in particular the knowing of which outshines all darkness (removes all obstacles and dispels all ignorance), awakening the individual to one's true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With the realization of the Atman, come universal compassion, love, and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher knowledge). This brings Ananda (Inner Joy or Peace). The festival marks the victory of good over evil, and uplifting of spiritual darkness.

Diwali celebrates this through festive fireworks, lights, flowers, sharing of sweets, and worship. While the story behind Deepavali varies from region to region, the essence is the same – to rejoice in the Inner Light (Atman) or the underlying reality of all things (Brahman). Indians pray to Gods on Diwali. According to one theory Diwali may have originated as a harvest festival, marking the last harvest of the year before winter. In an agrarian (or agricultural) society this results in businessmen closing accounts, and beginning a new accounting year. The deity of wealth in Hinduism, Goddess Lakshmi is therefore thanked on this day and everyone prays for a good year ahead. This is the common factor in Diwali celebrations all over the Indian subcontinent. In many parts of India, it is the homecoming of King Rama of Ayodhya after a 14-year exile in the forest. The people of Ayodhya (the capital of his kingdom) welcomed Rama by lighting rows (avali) of lamps (deepa), thus its name, Deepavali, or simply shortened as Diwali. Southern India marks it as the day Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura (celebrated as Naraka Chaturdashi). In western India it is also in honor of the day King Bali went to rule the nether/under-world by the order of Vishnu.

Diwali is celebrated on the first New moon day of the lunar Kartika month (although the celebrations begin two days prior and end two days after that day), which comes in the month of October or November. The grand celebrations of Diwali spread through five days. The First day is Dhanatrayodashi or Dhanteras. 'Dhan' means "wealth" and 'Trayodashi/Teras' means "13th day". It is an auspicious day for shopping of utensils and gold. Naraka Chaturdashi or Kali Chaudas is the Second day on which demon Narakasura was killed. It signifies the victory of good over evil and light over darkness. Lakshmi Puja marks the most important (Third) day of Diwali celebrations. Hindu homes worship Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and Ganesh, the God of auspicious beginnings, and then light lamps all across the streets and homes to welcome prosperity and well-being. Govardhan Puja is performed on the Fourth day also called Annakut, celebrated as the day Krishna defeated Indra. Lord Krishna taught people to worship nature, as mountains bring rains to earth. For Annakut, a mountain of food is decorated symbolizing Govardhan mountain lifted by Lord Krishna. In Maharashtra it is celebrated as Padva or Bali-Pratipada, commemorating King Bali. The Fifth day is Bhaiduj, on this day, brothers and sisters meet to express their love and affection for each other.

As per spiritual references, on this day "Lakshmi-Panchayatan" enters the Universe. Sri Vishnu, Sri Indra, Sri Kuber, Sri Gajendra and Sri Lakshmi are elements of this "Panchayatan" (a group of five). The tasks of these elements are:

1) Vishnu: Happiness (happiness and satisfaction)
2) Indra: Opulence (satisfaction due to wealth)
3) Kubera: Wealth (Generosity; one who gives away wealth)
4) Gajendra: Carries the wealth
5) Lakshmi: Divine Energy (Shakti) which provides energy to all the above activities.

There are two legends that associate the worship of ‘Goddess Lakshmi’ on this day. According to first one, on this day, Goddess Lakshmi emerged from Kshira Sagar, the Ocean of Milk, during the great churning of the oceans, Samudra manthan. The second legend (more popular in western India) relates to the Vamana avatar of Vishnu, the incarnation he took to kill the demon king Bali, thereafter it was on this day, that Vishnu came back to his abode, the Vaikuntha, so those who worship Lakshmi (Vishnu's consort) on this day, get the benefit of her benevolent mood, and are blessed with mental, physical and material well-being.

On the day of Diwali, many wear new clothes and share sweets and snacks. Some North Indian business communities start their financial year on Diwali and new account books are opened on this day. Diwali marks the end of the harvest season in most of India. Farmers are thankful for the plentiful bounty of the year gone by, and pray for a good harvest for the year to come. Traditionally this marks the closing of accounts for businesses dependent on the agrarian cycle, and the last major celebration before winter. The deity of Lakshmi symbolizes wealth and prosperity, and her blessings are invoked for a good year ahead. In India, Diwali is now considered to be a national festival, and the aesthetic aspect of the festival is enjoyed by most Indians regardless of faith.

The International Day of Non-Violence is observed on 2nd of October, the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, the day is referred to in India as Gandhi Jayanti. Gandhi Jayanti is a national holiday celebrated in India to mark the occasion of the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the "Father of the Nation". It is celebrated on October 2nd, every year. It is one of the three officially declared National Holidays in India (Republic Day/Jan 26, Independence Day/Aug 15 and Gandhi Jayanti/Oct 2) and is observed in all its states and union territories. Coincidentally, 2nd of October is also the birthday of Lal Bahadur Shastri, the third Prime Minister of India, who was a great follower of Mahatma Gandhi and he dedicated his life to the service of the country.

On 15th June 2007, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) voted to establish 2nd October as the International Day of Non-Violence. The resolution by the General Assembly asks all members of the UN system to commemorate 2nd October in "an appropriate manner and disseminate the message of non-violence, including through education and public awareness". The first ever celebration of the International day of non violence was observed in Bangkok by United Nations ESCAP, the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP or ESCAP), located in Bangkok, Thailand, is the regional arm of the United Nations Secretariat for the Asian and Pacific region. It was established in 1947 (then as the UN Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East) to encourage economic cooperation among its member states. The name was changed to the current, ESCAP, in 1974. It is one of five regional commissions under the administrative direction of United Nations headquarters.

In January 2004, Iranian Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi had taken a proposal for an International Day of Non-Violence from Akshay Bakaya, a Hindi Teacher in Paris teaching International school students in Paris, to the World Social Forum in Bombay. The idea gradually attracted the interest of some leaders of India's Congress Party until a Satyagraha Conference resolution in New Delhi in January 2007, initiated by Sonia Gandhi and Archbishop Desmond Tutu called upon the United Nations to adopt the idea of World Non-Violence Day. This is not to be confused with World Peace Day, the International Day of Peace, which is on September 21st of every year (since 1981) and calls for a full day of peace and ceasefire throughout the world.

A very happy, serene and joyful Dasara (Durga Ashtami/Maha Navami/Vijaya Dasami) wishes (28/09/09).

Dasara, also called "Dussehra", is among the most important festivals celebrated in India. It is also called as Navaratri (Nava ratri means Nine nights) and is a 10-day festival with the last day being Vijayadashami, the most auspicious day of Dasara. The Festival of Dasara concludes the festival of Navaratri, and the holy day also commemorates the triumph of good over evil. Forms of celebrations can take on a wide variety of manifestations, ranging from worshipping the Goddess Chamundeshwari (Durga) to exhibiting colorful toys on the festival days. There is a legend related to the exhibition of toys that is known as Golu (spelled Kolu in some regions). Since the goddess Durga needed tremendous power to kill the demon Mahishasura, all other gods and goddesses transferred their power to Goddess Durga and they all stood still as toys. To respect the self-sacrifice of these deities during the festival days, Hindus revere toys that are in shape of particular gods and goddesses.

Dasara usually falls in the month of September or October. According to a legend, Vijayadashami denotes the victory of truth over evil and was the day when the Hindu Goddess Chamundeshwari killed the demon Mahishasura. Mahishasura is the demon from whose name; the name Mysore has been derived. The city of Mysore, in Karnataka, has a long tradition of celebrating the Dasara festival and the festivities here are an elaborate affair and attract a large audience including foreigners. In Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, the festival is celebrated on the tenth day of the Ashwin (Ashwayuja) month (around October) according to the Shaka Hindu Calendar.

On the last day (Dasara day), the idols installed on the first day of the Navaratri are immersed in water. This day also marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana. When Rama had returned to Ayodhya after a very long period (14 years), there was a celebration for his return and the victory over Ravana. Also on this day, the Pandavas returned to their home after the one year incognito (living in disguise) exile period (Agnatavasa) they underwent following a preceding 12 year vanvas (Aranyavasa), or forest exile that was imposed on them. People visit each other and exchange sweets on this day and worship Aapta tree and exchange its leaves (known as golden leaves) as symbol of gold and wish each other a bright prosperous future.

There is a legend involving Raghuraja, an ancestor of Rama, Aapta tree and Kuber. There is also another legend about Aapta/Shami tree where the Pandavas hid their weapons during their exile. This tree then got famous as the golden tree and on this festival people exchange leaves of this tree as a celebration of happiness and victory over evil. People do pooja of books, gadgets, vehicles and weapons on this day (Ayudhapooja/Mahanavami). In Bengal, the festival is celebrated as Kali Puja or Durga Puja, while in Tamil Nadu, the festival incorporates worship of the Goddesses Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Shakti. The underlying tradition and mode of celebrating this festival is to celebrate the victory of the forces of Good over Evil. It is considered an auspicious day to begin new ventures in life.

Ramzan or Ramadan, is a period of fasting for Muslims. The name is derived from the name of the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The word Ramadan literally means burnt ground or intense heat. This month is considered to be the most holy month of the year in Islam. All followers of Islam are urged to follow the basic rules of fasting, prayer, and charity during this month.

The month of Ramzan is further divided into three parts, consisting of ten days each. Each ten day period is referred to as 'Ashra', which is the Arabic word for ten. These three parts are the Rahmah (God's mercy), Maghfirah (God's forgiveness), and Najah (Salvation). The period of Ramzan ends with the celebrations on the feast day of Eid-ul-Fitr. It is believed that God's teachings to the Prophet Muhammad took place during the month of Ramzan in the year 610 A.D. These teachings were eventually compiled together and became the Quran, which is the holy book of Islam.

The holy month of Ramzan is said to offer all Muslims the opportunity to reform themselves and achieve spiritual communion with God. Human beings tend to lose touch with their spiritual selves as they go about their lives. To bring them back to God, Islam prescribes an annual 'roza' or 'siyam' (means to refrain from), which must be undertaken during the month of Ramzan. Prophet Muhammad declared that "fasting is not only abstinence from food and drink, fasting is to refrain from obscene acts". As per this statement, it implies that one should have complete control over one's physical and mental facilities.

The period of Ramzan also encourages the promotion of harmony among members of different religions of the society. Residing in tranquility with the neighbouring inhabitants is considered to be one of the best forms of charity that a person can do. Ramzan is the time for fostering the spirit of unity among all members of a community.

A very happy, honoring and graceful Engineers’ Day wishes (15/09/09).

Engineers’ Day in India is celebrated on September 15th of every year to commemorate the birthday of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvariah (1860-1965). He was called a wizard in engineering. He was an eminent Indian engineer and statesman. He was a recipient of the Indian republic's highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955. He was also knighted by the British for his myriad/large contributions to the public good. Visvesvariah was born to Srinivasa Sastry and Venkachamma at Muddenahalli village, Chikkaballapur district of present-day Karnataka state in India, which was then the princely state of Mysore. He studied civil engineering at the College of Science, Pune and upon graduating as an engineer, took up a job with the Public Works Department (PWD) of Bombay, now known as Mumbai, and was later invited to join the Indian Irrigation Commission.

He implemented an extremely intricate system of irrigation in the Deccan area and also designed and patented a system of automatic weir water floodgates which were employed to raise the flood supply level of storage in the reservoir to the highest level likely to be attained by its flood without causing any damage to the dam. Visvesvariah achieved celebrity status when he designed a superior flood protection system to have protection from floods and was also instrumental in developing a system to protect sea ports from sea erosion. He supervised the construction of the KRS (Krishna Raja Sagar) dam across the Cauvery River from concept to inauguration. This dam created the biggest reservoir in Asia at the time it was built.

He was also called the precursor of economic planning in India. He took an interest not in engineering alone, but was capable of applying his talent to many allied matters connected with the development of the nation. His learned discourse on economic planning in India entitled 'Planned Economy for India and Reconstructing India' was the first available document on the planning effort of the country and it is still held as the parent source matter for economic planners. He was known for sincerity, time management and dedication to a cause.

To commemorate the birthday of Bharat Ratna Sir M Visvesvariah, the Council of the Institution of Engineers in India, decided to observe September 15th as the Engineers' Day every year. This is celebrated throughout the country through all the Centres of the Institution with learned discourses on a theme specified by the Council every year.

Teachers’ Day in India is celebrated on September 5th of every year to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was the first Vice President of India (1952-1962), and the second President of India (1962-1967). Radhakrishnan was one of India's most acclaimed scholars of comparative religion and philosophy. He is considered through his efforts to have built a bridge between East and West by having shown the philosophical systems of each tradition to be comprehensible within the terms of the other. He wrote authoritative exegesis/journal of India's religious and philosophical literature for the English speaking world.

When he became President, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, September 5th. He replied, "Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if 5th September is observed as Teachers' Day". His birthday has since been celebrated as Teachers' Day in India. Teachers’ Day is also celebrated in various other countries across the world on various dates, a day which is intended to be a special day for the appreciation of teachers. Also, World Teachers' Day is held annually on 5th October since 1994 to commemorate teachers’ organizations worldwide.

Its aim is to mobilize support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers. According to UNESCO, World Teachers' Day represents a significant token of the awareness, understanding and appreciation displayed for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development. Education International (EI), the global union federation that represents education professionals worldwide, strongly believes that World Teachers' Day should be internationally recognized and celebrated around the world. Every year, EI launches a public awareness campaign to highlight the contributions of the teaching profession.

On this day, students show their appreciation to the teachers by wishing them and presenting the gifts including cards and flowers. Also, at some schools/institutions on this day, the responsibility of teaching is taken up by the senior students as an appreciation for their teachers.

Onam is the National festival of Kerala in India. It is one of the festivals celebrated across the Globe by Malayalees (referring to the people who speak Malayalam, the language of Kerala). It marks the homecoming of mythological King Mahabali/Balichakravarthi and is an annual harvest festival. Keralites celebrate Onam festival to commemorate the memory of a Great King Mahabali who would keep his promise. Mahabali fulfilled his name as the great martyr for the sake of Truth (Satya). The name "Mahabali" itself means Great Sacrifice. It is a popular festival among the cultural repertoire of Malayalees, and falls in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August/September as per the Gregorian calendar), the first month of the Malayalam calendar, and lasts for ten days. Traditionally celebrated as a harvest festival, mythologically it is linked to Malayalee – Hindu folktales; but Onam is celebrated by people of all religions.

The celebrations begin within a fortnight of the Malayalam New Year and go on for ten days. The last day called the Thiruvonam is the most important. All over the state, rituals along with new clothes, traditional cuisine, dance, and music mark this harvest festival. The ten-day celebrations of Onam start on Atham day. Earthen mounds, which look somewhat like square pyramids, representing Mahabali and Lord Vishnu are placed in the dung-plastered courtyards in front of the house and beautifully decorated with flowers, known as ‘Onapookkalam’ (Rangoli). The important part of the festival opens in some localities on Thiruvonam day and in others on the previous/penultimate day known as Uthradam. On Thiruvonam day, King Mahabali is believed to visit every Malayalee home and meet his people. Houses are cleaned and decorated with flowers and traditional lamps/lights.

The most important things about Onam are the Onakkodi, the new clothes worn on this day and Onam Sadya, a feast which is quite elaborate. The most important thing is the grand lunch on the Thiruvonam day, which is also called the Second Onam. Whatever may happen people will not miss the Grand lunch (Sadya). There is a saying in Malayalam that "Kanam Vittum Onam Unnanam" which means "We should have the Thiruvonam lunch even if we have to sell all our properties" which shows the importance of the grand lunch on the Thiruvonam day. The Vallamkali (the snake boat race) is another event that is synonymous with Onam. Well-known races include the Aranmula Boat Race and the Nehru Trophy Boat Race.

Onam is celebrated with a focus on different cultural aspects at different places depicting different cultural and social aspects of Kerala life. This festival is also important because of its popularity with all communities within Kerala. Although the festival of Onam originated with, and is connected to the Hindu religion, it is celebrated today with equal fervour by the Hindus, Muslims and Christians of Kerala, symbolising unity in diversity.

Ganesh Chaturthi or Ganesha Festival is a day on which Lord Ganesha, the son of God Shiva and Goddess Parvati, is believed to bestow his presence on earth for all his devotees. It is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chavithi in Sanskrit, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu; as Chavath in Konkani and as Chathaa in Nepali. It is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha. The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhadrapada, starting on the Shukla Chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period, a phase of the moon in which the face of the moon gets larger). The date usually falls between 20th August and 15th September. The festival lasts for 10 days, ending on Ananta Chaturdashi, and is celebrated all over India, widely in Nepal, Sri Lanka and in many locations across the world.

Ganesh Chaturthi starts with the installation of the Lord Ganesh statues in colorfully decorated homes and specially erected temporary structures, mantapas/pandals in every locality. The pandals are erected by the people or a specific society or locality or group by collecting monetary contributions. The mantapas are decorated specially for the festival, either by using decorative items like flower garlands, fruits and lights or are theme based decorations, which depict religious themes or current events. The statues are worshiped with families and friends. For 10 days, from Bhadrapada Shudha Chaturthi to the Ananta Chaturdashi, Ganesha is worshipped. On the 11th day, the statue is taken through the streets in a procession accompanied with dancing, singing, and fanfare to be immersed in a river or the sea symbolizing a ritual see-off of the Lord in his journey towards his abode in Kailash while taking away with him the misfortunes of his devotees.

Ganesha or Gajanana, the elephant-headed son of Lord Shiva and Parvati, is widely worshipped as the supreme god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. The term 'Ganesha' means 'Eesha - Head/Lord' of 'Ganas - Hosts/Troops/Followers of Lord Shiva'. Ganesha, also known as Vighnaraja, the Lord of Obstacles, both of a material and spiritual order, is popularly worshipped as a remover of obstacles, though traditionally he also places obstacles in the path of those who need to be checked. Devotees believe that if Ganesha is propitiated, he grants success, prosperity and protection against adversity and celebrate his festival, Ganesh Chaturthi in a grand manner.

An Independence Day is an annual celebration commemorating the anniversary of a nation's assumption of independent statehood, usually after ceasing to be a colony or part of another state, more rarely after the end of a military occupation. Most countries honor their respective independence day as a national holiday.

India's Independence Day is celebrated on August 15th to commemorate its independence from British rule and its birth as a sovereign nation on that day in 1947. It is one of the three national holidays (Republic Day/Jan 26, Independence Day/Aug 15 and Gandhi Jayanti/Oct 2) in India. All over the country, flag-hoisting ceremonies are conducted by the local administration in attendance. The main event takes place in New Delhi, where the Prime Minister hoists the National Flag at the Red Fort and delivers a nationally televised speech from its ramparts. In his speech, he highlights the achievements of his government during the past year, raises important issues and gives a call for further development. The Prime Minister also pays his tribute to leaders of the freedom struggle. A colourful pageant showcasing India’s cultural diversity, symbolic depictions of the country’s advances in science and technology, and a joint display of India’s military capabilities by the armed forces are an essential part of the Independence Day celebrations.

On 3rd June 1947, Viscount (in Great Britain, the fourth rank of nobility - the order of Nobility is; Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount, Baron) Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last British Governor-General of India, announced the partitioning of the British Indian Empire into India and Pakistan, under the provisions of the Indian Independence Act 1947. At the stroke of midnight, on 14th August 1947 (00:00 hrs, Aug 15th), India became an independent nation. This was preceded by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's (first Prime Minister of India) famous speech titled 'Tryst with Destiny'.

Krishna Janmashtami, also known as "Krishnashtami", "Gokulashtami", "Srikrishna Jayanti" or sometimes merely as "Janmashtami", is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, an incarnation/avatar of God Vishnu. Janmashtami is observed on the eighth day, Ashtami tithi, of the dark half or Krishna Paksha of the month of Bhaadrapada (the sixth month) in the Hindu calendar, when the Rohini Nakshatra (western star name: Aldebaran) is ascendant.

The festival falls between August mid and September mid months of the Gregorian calendar. The ritual performed on this occasion is to fast the previous day (Saptami, seventh day), which is followed by a night-long vigil commemorating the birth of Krishna at midnight. At midnight, the deity of the infant Krishna is bathed, placed in a cradle and worshipped. The fast is completed after Aarti, a special prayer. In the early morning, women draw patterns of little children's feet outside the house with rice-flour paste, walking towards the house. This symbolizes the entry of the infant Krishna into his foster-home. This is performed to recreate incidents from the life of Krishna and commemorate his love for people.

Special programs and events are conducted in regions of Mathura and Vrindavan on this day. Mathura is reputed to be the birthplace of Krishna. While the Rasa Lila or dramatic enactments of the life of Krishna, recreates the youthful Krishna's day; Govinda, an event in which teams of young men form human pyramids to reach a pot, that is positioned at a convenient height, and break it. The topmost person on the human pyramid reaches and breaks the Dahi Handi (a clay pot filled with buttermilk) and when that happens, the buttermilk is spilled over the entire group, symbolizing their achievement through unity. The festival is thus celebrated with great joy and communal togetherness by one and all.

Friendship Day celebrations take place on the first (1st) Sunday of August every year. The tradition of dedicating a day in honor of friends began in US in 1935. Gradually the festival gained popularity and today Friendship Day is celebrated in large number of countries including India. On this day people spend time with their friends and express love for them. Exchange of Friendship Day Gifts like flowers, cards and wrist bands is a popular tradition of this occasion.

The United States Congress, in 1935, proclaimed the first Sunday of August as National Friendship Day. Since then, celebration of National Friendship Day became an annual event. The noble idea of honoring the beautiful relationship of friendship caught on with the people and soon Friendship Day became a hugely popular festival. Following the popularity and success of Friendship Day in US, several other countries adopted the tradition of dedicating a day to friends. And now, International Friendship Day is enthusiastically celebrated by several countries across the world, however, some countries celebrate the "Friends Day" on July 20th. For this reason, on 17th July 2009, Facebook (a social networking website) launched a marketing campaign declaring "Friends Day" on 20th July. In 1997, the United Nations named 'Winnie the Pooh bear' as the world's Ambassador of Friendship.

There are numerous folktales and several instances in mythological legends which show that friends and friendship have been valued since the beginning of civilized world. As an intrinsically social creature, human loves to make friends to further this process of socialization. The Bible, the primary text of the western civilization, reflects upon friendship as the bond that forms the foundation to human faith, trust and companionship. Besides, there are several tales from the Old Testament and the New Testament about the value of friendship and how true friendship is a treasure to unearth. A noticeable point is that, both the versions make a difference between the two broad meanings of friendship- one is a mere acquaintance, the other is a more affectionate relation.

In the Old Testament, Abraham is called the “Friend of God” because of the intimacy of his relations. The Old Testament is replete with such interesting tales of friends and friendship. In the New Testament, the relationship between Jesus and his disciples clearly depicts how human friendship can constantly grow. From being teacher and disciple, to lord and servant their relationship finally grew to an unparalleled friendship. In the famous Hindu epic ‘Mahabharata’, Lord Krishna demonstrates many colors of friendship - affection, romance, brotherhood, protection, guidance, intimacy and even teasing. Friendship is all about these and much more.

Lot many social and cultural organizations too celebrate the occasion and mark Friendship Day by hosting programs and get-togethers. It may be noted that some associations celebrate Friendship Day in an entirely different time of the year and with different customs. For instance, World Friendship Day is on the first Sunday in August every year; Women's Friendship Day is on the third Sunday in September; International Friendship Month is February; National Friendship Week is the third week of May. However, what is remarkably same is the idea behind the celebration of the day. Everywhere, people express love for their friends and cherish their presence in life.

Parents' Day is celebrated on the fourth (4th) Sunday of July, every year. This was established in 1994 when President Bill Clinton signed a Congressional Resolution into law (36 U.S.C. & 135) for "recognizing, uplifting, and supporting the role of parents in the rearing of children". It is a holiday similar to a combination of Father's Day and Mother's Day.

Parental figures in the United States receive the recognition for the role they play in their children’s lives on Parents’ Day. The day aims to promote responsible parenting and to recognize positive parental role models. It celebrates the special bonds of love between parents/parental figures and their children. Citizens, organizations, and federal, state, and local governmental and legislative entities are encouraged to recognize Parents’ Day through proclamations, activities, and educational efforts to recognize, uplift and support the role of parents in bringing up their children. The Parents’ Day Council plays an active role in celebrating and promoting Parents’ Day through a range of events and activities. The council honors “Parents of the Year” at local, state and national levels. Those who have been nominated or selected are people who exemplify the standard and ideal of positive parenthood. Exemplary parents from each state are nominated for “National Parents of the Year”.

Parents’ Day is a popular time for people to send cards and gifts, including flowers, cakes and food hampers, to those who play an important role as a positive parental figure in their lives. It is also a time for families to come together for lunches or dinners. Special tributes to parental figures who are seen as role models are made through local announcements, at church services, or at local community events. Parents’ Day proclamations and rallies have been held in recent times and involved organizations such as the United Civil Rights Councils of America. Parents’ Day promotes the message that the role of the parent is important in human development, which requires investment, focus, and commitment. Parents’ Day is a national observance in the United States and many countries. It is celebrated on different days in various countries. In the United States (and most part of the world), Parents' Day is held on the fourth Sunday of every July. In the Republic of Korea, Parents' Day is celebrated on May 8th and in Vietnam, Parents' Day is held on July 7th, every year.

For information, Single Parents' Day takes place each year on March 21st. It's a day set aside to honor and applaud the hard work single parents do each and every day in raising their children. The idea for Single Parents' Day began back in 1984 with an article written by Janice Moglen, a single mother of two, who hoped that Single Parents' Day might one day gain the recognition, which many associate with both Mother's Day and Father's Day. It is believed that the day, March 21st, is chosen to coincide with the inception of Parents Without Partners, which began 50 years ago, on March 21st, 1957.

As I write this here, I know for sure that this is not gender specific and is applicable to any human who does not know true meaning of trust and does not trust other humans. Well, some things such as “Trust, Truth, Love” do not need to have any adjectives in addition as they are complete in their own stature. The terms, “Real Trust, Actual Truth, Pure Love” might be grammatically correct, but literally, are not essential as they just add word strength. Trust, in itself is real; Truth, in itself is actual and Love, in itself is pure. However, as most of the current generation give little time to understand such things, I mentioned here as the true meaning of trust. And yes, being a part of this generation; even I am not flawless. This work might look just like some words in rhyming, with no timing. But for me, it is of some meaning and with no intention to hurt anyone….

Fake చెయ్యడంలో వివిధ రకాలు; Resume cook-up, make-up, touch-up... అందులో, మొత్తంగా మారుస్తున్న దాన్ని బట్టి, కొత్తగా చేరుస్తున్న దాన్ని బట్టి. కాని, పదం ఎక్కువైనా, పదం తక్కువైనా; పదార్థం యదార్థం ఐతే కాదుగా. నిజం అనే పునాది పైనే నమ్మకం నిలబడుతుంది, నమ్మకం తోటే జీవితం నడుస్తుంది; అసలైన సంతోషం లభిస్తుంది. డబ్బులు ఎక్కువగా రావాలంటే డబుల్ ఎక్స్పీరియెన్సు కావాలని, రియల్ క్విక్ గా రియల్ facts ని fake చెయ్యడం ఎంతవరకు సమంజసం! మన పుట్టుక, చదువు, అనుభవం, కాదేది fake కి అనర్హం అనే విషయం, విస్మయకరం. మనది కాని వ్యక్తిత్వం తో జీవించడం ఉఛ్ఛస్థితికి నిచ్చెన కాదు, దుస్థితికి మచ్చుతునక. ఇతరుల అవకాశాలను ఇలా fakeతో మనవి చేసుకోవడం, కన్నం వేయడంతో సమానం కాదా!

Fake చెయ్యడం సులువు కాదు. అందుకు ఎంతో ఆలోచన కావాలి, చాలా ధైర్యం కావాలి. కాని, అంత ధైర్యం, ఆలోచన ఉన్నవారికి నిజాయితి తోడైతే సాధించలేని కార్యం ఉంటుందా! ఎటువంటి చింతా లేని సంతోషకరమైన జీవితంకన్నా మించిన సంపాదన, నమ్మకానికి మించిన ఆస్తి, వేరే ఇంకేది! కంపెనీలు అడుగుతున్నాయని, మనం ఆ(అడ్డ)దారిలో వెళ్తున్నామని అనుకోవడం ఊరటే కానీ ఉపాయం కాదు. Freshers అంటే Field కి 'Fresh' అని అనుకోవాలి కాని 'Fresh' from college అని అనుకోవడం అనారోగ్య వాతావరణానికి కారణం. కంపెనీలు కాండిడేట్ల క్రెడిబిలిటీని చూసి ఉద్యోగంలో చేర్చుకోవడం నేర్చుకోవాలి. ఆ దిశగా మార్పు కోసం మనం నడుం కట్టాలి, కొంచెం ఓర్పు పట్టాలి. Software/IT తో పాటు teaching, banking, manufacturing, production industries, support/service field మరియు ప్రభుత్వ రంగాల్లో కూడా అవకాశాలు అనేకం ఉన్నాయి.

మన మనస్సాక్షిని మనం ఎదుర్కొని నిలబడేలా, ఎటువంటి విపత్కర పరిస్థితినైనా కలబడేలా చేయగల శక్తి, నిజాయితి. అది కలిగిన వ్యక్తికి ఎటువంటి అనవసర భయాలు ఉండవు. అలాంటి వ్యక్తులున్న సమాజానికి ఎటువంటి దురాచారాలు అంటవు. ఆరోగ్యకరమైన సమ సమాజ నిర్మాణం ప్రతి పౌరుని కర్తవ్యం. సమాజం కోసం చెయ్యాలన్న గొప్ప ఆలోచన ఉండకపోయినా; మనం నిజాయితీగా, నిర్భయంగా ఉండాలంటే ఇది కచ్చితంగా ఆలోచించాలి. ఎందుకంటే, మన తరువాత తరానికి మనం మంచి సంస్కారాన్ని అందించాలి కాని వంచించే సంస్కారం కాదు.
ఈ ఒక్క వ్యాసం ద్వారా మొత్తం సమాజం ఒక్కసారిగా మారుతుందన్న గొప్ప ఆశ కాదు. కాని, ఎప్పటికైనా అటువంటి మార్పు వస్తుందన్న ఆశ; అందుకు నా వంతు ప్రయత్నం ఉందన్న సంతృప్తి ముఖ్యం. వేయి మైళ్ళ ప్రయాణమైనా మొదట వేసేది ఒక్క అడుగే. అడుగులు కలిస్తే మొదలు పరుగు, పరుగులు పెడితే దూరం తరుగు, తరిగిన దూరంతో నమ్మకం పెరుగు, నమ్మకం తోటే కలుగును గెలుపు, నిజమైన గెలుపు సదా హాయి గొలుపు. సాధించిన గెలుపును మనవాళ్ళతో కలిసి పంచుకోవటంలో కలిగే సంతోషం, అదే చేస్తుంది జీవితాన్ని విశేషం. ధనాన్ని కలిగి ఉండడం కన్నా జనాన్ని కలిగి ఉండడంలో ఉంది నిజమైన సంతోషం.

A very happy, honoring and playful Father’s Day wishes (21/06/09).

Father's Day is a secular celebration inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother's Day, in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting, and to honor and commemorate fathers and forefathers. It falls on the third (3rd) Sunday of June, every year. However, it is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and typically involves gift-giving, special dinners to fathers, and family-oriented activities.

The driving force behind the establishment of the integration of Father's Day was Ms. Sonora Smart Dodd, born in Creston, Washington. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, as a single parent reared his six children in Spokane, Washington. She was inspired by Anna Jarvis's efforts to establish Mother's Day. Although she initially suggested June 5th, the anniversary of her father's death, she did not provide the organizers with enough time to make arrangements, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June and thus being followed on every third Sunday of June each year. The first June Father's Day was celebrated on June 19th, 1910 in Spokane, WA. However, the first observance of Father's Day is believed to have been held on July 5th, 1908 in a church located in Fairmont, West Virginia, by Dr. Robert Webb of West Virginia at the Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South of Fairmont. The church still exists under the name of Central United Methodist Church.

Sonora Smart Dodd was the first to solicit the idea of having an official Father's Day observance to honor all fathers. It took many years to make the holiday official. In spite of support from the YWCA, the YMCA and churches, it ran the risk of disappearing from the calendar. A bill was introduced in 1913, US President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea in 1924, and a national committee was formed in the 1930s by trade groups in order to legitimize the holiday. It was made a federal holiday when President Lyndon Johnson issued a proclamation in 1966. The holiday was not officially recognized until 1972, during the presidency of Richard Nixon.

Although the name of the event is usually understood as a plural possessive (i.e. "day belonging to fathers"), which would under normal English punctuation guidelines be spelled "Fathers' Day", the most common spelling is "Father's Day", as if it were a singular possessive (i.e. "day belonging to Father") and is spelled so, since the bill has been introduced to the US Congress as the first attempt to establish the holiday. In addition to Father's Day, International Men's Day is celebrated in many countries, most often on November 19th every year. The Associated Men's Wear Retailers formed a National Father's Day Committee in New York City in the 1930s, which was renamed in 1938 to National Council for the Promotion of Father's Day and incorporated several other trade groups. This council had the goals of legitimizing the holiday in the minds of the people and managing the holiday as a commercial event in a more systematic way, in order to boost the sales during this occasion.

Mother's Day is a day honoring mothers, celebrating motherhood generally and the positive contributions of mothers to the society. It falls on the second Sunday of May, every year. It is the result of a campaign by Anna Marie Jarvis (1864-1948), who, following the death of her mother on May 9th, 1905, devoted her life to establishing Mother's Day as a national, and later an international, holiday. However, the first known observance of Mother's Day in the U.S. occurred in Albion, Michigan, on May 13th, 1877, the second Sunday of the month and known to be followed each year to pay tribute to every mother.

The modern Mother's Day holiday was created by Anna Jarvis, as a day to honor mothers and motherhood; especially within the context of families, and family relationships. It is now celebrated in many parts of the world. Father's Day is a corresponding holiday honoring fathers. In 1912, Anna Jarvis trademarked the phrases "second Sunday in May" and "Mother's Day", and created the Mother's Day International Association. She was specific about the location of the apostrophe; it was to be a singular possessive, for each family to honour their mother, not a plural possessive commemorating all mothers in the world. Common usage in English language also dictates that the ostensibly/apparently singular possessive "Mother's Day" is the preferred spelling.

The practice of celebrating Mother's Day is a relatively recent tradition, first established in the U.S.A. in the early 20th century. It should not be confused with other Pagan and Christian traditions honoring mothers, or with the U.K. holiday, Mothering Sunday, which is also known as Mother's Day and dates back to the 16th century. Mothering Sunday, also called Ladies Day, in the UK predates the U.S.A holiday. Mother's Day continues to this day to be one of the most significant and also commercially-successful U.S. occasions.

May Day occurs on May 1st every year and followed as a public holiday in many countries. May Day is synonymous with International Workers' Day, or Labour Day, which celebrates the social and economic achievements of the labour movement. As a day of celebration the holiday has ancient origins, and it can relate to many customs that have survived into modern times. Many of these customs are due to May Day being a cross-quarter day, meaning that in the Northern Hemisphere it falls approximately halfway between the spring equinox and summer solstice. While February 1st is the first day of Spring, May 1st is the first day of summer. May Day marks the end of the half of the year in the Northern hemisphere, and it has traditionally been an occasion for popular and often raucous celebrations, regardless of the locally prevalent political or religious establishment.

The earliest May Day celebrations appeared in pre-Christian Europe, with the festival of Flora, the Roman Goddess of flowers, the Walpurgis Night (Bon-Fire festival) celebrations of the Germanic countries. The day was a traditional summer holiday in many pre-Christian European Pagan cultures (The term Pagan is from the Latin paganus, an adjective originally meaning "rural", "rustic" or "of the country". As a noun, paganus is used to mean 'country dweller, villager'). In the Roman Catholic tradition, May is observed as Mary's month, and in these circles ‘May Day’ is usually a celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In this connection, in works of art, school skits, and so forth, Mary's head will often be adorned with flowers. Fading in popularity since the late 20th century is the giving of "May baskets", small baskets of sweets and/or flowers, usually left anonymously on neighbours' and friends' doorsteps.

Traditional English May Day rites and celebrations include Morris dancing, crowning a May-Queen and celebrations involving a May-pole, a pole around which traditional dancers circle with ribbons. May Day has been a traditional day of festivities throughout the centuries. With Christianity came agricultural feasts such as Plough Sunday (the first Sunday in January), Rogation-tide, Harvest Festival and May Day. It is most associated with towns and villages celebrating springtime fertility and revelry with village fetes and community gatherings. May 1st in 1707, also was the day the Act of Union came into effect, joining England and Scotland to form the Kingdom of Great Britain.

May Day was also celebrated by some early European settlers of the American continent. In some parts of the United States, May Baskets are made. These baskets are small and usually filled with flowers or treats/sweets and left at someone's doorstep. Modern May Day ceremonies in the U.S. vary greatly from region to region and many unite both the holiday's "Green Root" (pagan) and "Red Root" (labor) traditions. Among the largest is the May Day Parade and Pageant created by ‘In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask’ Theatre, an event that has happened every year since 1975 in Minneapolis and now attracts many people.

May Day can refer to various labour celebrations conducted on May 1st that commemorate the fight for the eight hour day. May Day in this regard is called International Workers' Day, or Labour Day. The idea for a "workers holiday" began in Australia in 1856. With the idea having spread around the world, the choice of May 1st became a commemoration by the Second International for the people involved in the 1886 Haymarket affair. As such, May Day has become an international celebration of the social and economic achievements of the labour movement. Although May Day received its inspiration from the United States, the U.S. Congress designated May 1st as Loyalty Day in 1958 due to the day's appropriation by the Soviet Union. May 1st also is recognized in the United States as Law Day.

A very holy Good Friday Festival (10/04/09) and happy Easter on Sunday (12/04/09).

Good Friday, also called Holy Friday or Great Friday, is the Friday immediately preceding Easter Sunday. It commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus at Calvary. However, it is called ‘Good Friday’ because, all that tragedy brought about the greatest good there could be and the hope that no tragedy, not even death, can overwhelm God’s providence, love, and grace. In some secular communities Good Friday has been erroneously referred to as "Easter Friday". However, the following Friday (after Easter) is the correct day to be named as Easter Friday. Good Friday or Black Friday, is a religious holiday observed primarily by adherents to Christianity commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Golgotha, an event central to Christian theology. The holiday is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, and often coincides with the Jewish observance of Passover.

On this day, Jesus carried his cross to the site of execution (assisted by Simon of Cyrene), called the place of the Skull, or "Golgotha" in Hebrew and "Calvary" in Latin. There he was crucified along with two other criminals. Jesus agonized on the cross for six hours and gave up his spirit. Joseph of Arimathea took the body of Jesus, wrapped it in a clean linen shroud, and placed it in his own new tomb that had been carved in the rock in a garden near the site of crucifixion and rolled a large rock over the entrance of the tomb. On the third day, Sunday, which is now known as Easter Sunday (or Pascha, the Jewish feast of the Passover), Jesus rose from the dead.

Good Friday is the Friday before Easter, which is calculated differently in Eastern Christianity and Western Christianity. Easter falls on the first Sunday following the Paschal Full Moon, the full moon on or after 21 March, taken to be the date of the vernal equinox. The Western calculation uses the Gregorian calendar, while the Eastern calculation uses the Julian calendar. Based on the scriptural details of the Sanhedrin Trial of Jesus, the Crucifixion of Jesus was most probably been on a Friday. The exact year of Good Friday has been estimated as AD 33, by two different groups, and originally as AD 34 by Isaac Newton via the differences between the Biblical and Julian calendars and the crescent of the moon.

In many countries with a strong Christian tradition, the day is observed as a public or federal holiday. Many Protestant communities hold special services on this day as well. In the German Lutheran tradition from the 16th to the 20th century, this was the most important holiday, and abstention from all worldly works was expected. Holy/Great/Good Friday is observed as a strict fast, and adult Christians are expected to abstain from all food and drink the entire day to the extent that their health permits. Also, ‘Spring Holiday’ is a generic North American term sometimes used in place of Easter or Good Friday. A very happy, serene and joyful Sri Rama Navami wishes (04/04/09).

Rama Navami is a Hindu festival, celebrating the birth of Hindu God/Lord Rama, son of King Dasaratha of Ayodhya, and a divine figure in Hinduism. The day also known as Sri Rama Navami, falls on the Navami, ninth day of the Chaitra month of Hindu lunar year in 'Shukla paksha' or waxing moon, thus named Chaitra Masa Shuklapaksha Navami, and marks the end of nine-day Chaitra-Navaratri celebrations. Hindus normally perform Kalyanotsavam (marriage celebration) with small murtis/idols of Rama and Sita in their houses, and at the end of the day the deity is taken to a procession on the streets. This day also marks the end of the nine-day utsavam called Chaitra Navaratri (Maharashtra) or Vasanthothsavam (Andhra Pradesh - festival of Spring), which starts with Gudi Paduva (Maharashtra) or Ugadi (South India).

In South India, the day is also celebrated as the wedding anniversary of Rama and his consort Sita, thus ceremonial wedding ceremonies, 'Sitarama Kalyanam', of the celestial couple are held at temples throughout the region, with great fanfare and accompanied by group chanting of name of Rama, 'Rama nama smaranam'.
Some highlights of this day are -

Ø Kalyanam (Ceremonial wedding of Sri Rama and Sita Devi performed by temple priests) at Bhadrachalam on the banks of the river Godavari in Khammam district, Andhra Pradesh.
Ø Paanakam, a sweet drink prepared on this day with jaggery and pepper.
Ø Procession of idols in the evening that is accompanied with play of water and colours.

Sri Rama Navami occurs at the beginning of the summer when the sun starts moving nearer to the northern hemisphere. The Sun is considered to be the progenitor of Rama's dynasty which is called the Sun dynasty. This dynasty is famous for great kings like King Dileep, King Raghu and many others. In all King Raghu was noted to stand for his word. Following the foot prints of his great ancestor King Raghu, Lord Rama too went to jungles to keep the promises made by his father Dasaratha to his step mother Kaikeyi. Hence Rama came to be known as Raghunatha, Raghupati, Raghavendra, Raghunandana and Raghurama. All these names beginning with the prefix ‘Raghu’ is also suggestive of some link with Sun-worship. The hour chosen for the observance of the lord's birth is that when the sun is overhead and is at its maximum brilliance. In some Hindu sects, prayers on Rama Navami day start not with an invocation to Rama but to Surya (Sun - Ravi in Sanskrit). Again the syllable ‘Ra’ is used in the word to describe the sun and brilliance in many languages.

The important celebrations on this day take place at Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, Bhadrachalam in Andhra Pradesh and Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, thronged by thousands of devotees; and Rathayatras, the chariot processions, also known as 'Shobha yatras' of lord Rama, his wife Sita, brother Lakshmana and devotee Hanuman, are taken out at several places and in Ayodhya, thousands of people take a dip in the sacred river Sarayu, on this auspicious day.

A very happy, prosperous and joyful Ugadi/Gudi Paduva/Baisakhi/New year wishes (27/03/09).

Ugadi means, 'yuga' (era) + 'aadi' (beginning); the start of an era. This is the new year's day for the people of the Deccan region of India. While the people of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka use the term ‘Ugadi’ for this festival, the people of Maharashtra term the same festival, observed on the same day, ‘Gudi Padwa/Gudi Paduva’. Sindhis, people from Sindh, celebrate the same day as their New Year day ‘Cheti Chand’. In Punjab and Haryana, for Sikhs, it is ‘Baisakhi’ (originally Vaishakhi); in Kerala it is called as ‘Vishu’; in Assam this day is called ‘Bihu’ and in Tamil Nadu it is celebrated as ‘Puthandu’. Also, as ‘Poila Boishakh’ in both Bangladesh and West Bengal, as well as by people in Tripura.

It is an ancient harvest festival in many regions, which also marks beginning of a new year, and new harvest season. People in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Sindh region celebrate it on the first day of the bright half of the Hindu month of Chaitra (generally, first week of April – April 6th/7th) where as it is celebrated in mid April (April 13th/14th) in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Assam, West Bengal and other regions of the country.

Ugadi/Yugadi is celebrated on a different day every year because the Hindu calendar is a lunisolar calendar (which indicates both the moon phase and the time of the solar year). The Saka calendar begins with the month of Chaitra (March/April) and Ugadi marks the first day of the new year. In the terminology used by the lunar calendar, Yugadi falls on Chaitra Shudhdha Paadyami or the first day of the bright half of the Hindu month of Chaitra. This generally falls in the month of March or April of the Gregorian calendar.

Vasanta Navaratri (literally - The 9-night Spring festival) starts on this day, Chaitra Shudhdha Paadyami and culminates nine days later on Sri Ramanavami which falls on Chaitra Sudhdha Navami. On this day of Yugadi, people traditionally gather to listen to the recitation of the religious almanac (Panchaangam) of the coming year, and to the general forecast of the year to come. The day begins with ritual showers (oil bath) followed by prayers, and then the sumptuous feast along with a special dish, a specific mixture of -

1) Neem Buds/Flowers for Bitter
2) Raw Mango for Tangy/Umami
3) Green Chilli for Hot/Spice
4) Jaggery/Sugar for Sweet
5) Tamarind Juice for Sour
6) Pinch of Salt for Salt

This mixture with all six tastes is called "Ugadi Pachhadi/Pickle" in Telugu and "Bevu-Bella" in Kannada, symbolizes the fact that life is a mixture of different experiences (sadness, happiness, anger, fear, disgust, surprise), which should be accepted together and with equanimity.

Sweet, salty, sour, spicy, bitter and umami
All the six with a mix make one’s life yummy
Each of these has its own esteem and taste
None of these can be termed as a waste
These basic components depict states of life
From the start till the stall, in small or rife
Every person will have his or her own share
But should handle the times with utmost care
Treating them with balance is challenging
Winning them treats us with the zing thing

Holi (referred to as ‘Phagwa’ in Bhojpuri), also called the ‘Festival of Colours’, is a popular Hindu spring festival observed in India, Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad, the UK and Nepal. In West Bengal, it is known as Dolyatra (Doljatra) or Boshonto Utsav and in South India, it is called Vasantotsavam (spring festival).

Holi takes place over two days in the later part of February or March. As per the Hindu calendar, it falls on the Phalgun Purnima (or Pooranmashi, Full Moon Day). On the first day, burning of the demoness Holika, demon Hiranyakashipu's sister, in huge bonfires at night. It is called 'Kama dahanam' in Andhra Pradesh. On the second day, known as Dhulheti, people spend the day throwing coloured powder and water at each other. A special drink called thandai/bhang is prepared on this day and is taken during the celebrations. Rangapanchami occurs a few days later on a Panchami (fifth day of the full moon), marking the end of festivities involving colours. Apart from being such a colourful festival, there are various aspects of Holi which makes it so significant for our lives. Ranging from socio-cultural, religious to biological there is every reason why we must heartily enjoy the festival and cherish the reasons for its celebrations.

Holi gets us close to our religion and our mythology as it is essentially the celebration of various legends associated with the festival. Foremost is the legend of Prahlad and Hiranyakashyap. The legend says there once lived a devil and powerful king, Hiranyakashyap who considered himself a god and wanted everybody to worship him. To his great ire, his son, Prahlad began to worship, Lord Vishnu. To get rid of his son, Hiranyakashyap asked his sister, Holika to enter a blazing fire with Prahlad in her lap, as she had a boon to enter fire unscathed. Legend has it that Prahlad was saved for his extreme devotion for the lord while Holika paid a price for her sinister desire. The tradition of burning Holika or the 'Holika dahan' comes mainly from this legend.

Celebration of the various legends associated with Holi are meant to reassure people of the power of the truth as the moral of all these legends is the ultimate victory of good over evil. The legend of Hiranyakashyap and Prahlad also points to the fact that extreme devotion to God pays as God always takes his true devotee in his shelter. All these legends help people to follow a righteous life and believe in the virtue of being truthful. Holi helps to bring diverse sections of society together and strengthen the secular fabric of our country. The festival is celebrated by Hindus and non-Hindus alike. The festival aims to break down barriers between the rich and poor when all sections of society celebrate together with a spirit of brotherhood. Also, playful throwing of the coloured powders traditionally made of Neem, Kumkum, Haldi, Bilva (Indian Lilac, Saffron, Turmeric, Bael) and other medical herbs has a medicinal significance as per Ayurveda.

In Mathura, the birth place of Lord Krishna, this day is celebrated with special puja and the traditional custom of worshipping Lord Krishna. Bengalis celebrate Holi as Dol Yatra or the swing festival where the icons of Krishna and Radha are placed on swings and women sing devotional songs, throw colours and flowers on them and perform dances as devotees take turns to swing them. The people of Orissa celebrate Holi in a similar manner but here the idols of Jagannath, the deity of the Jagannath Temple of Puri, replace the idols of Krishna and Radha. In Hyderabad, Holi is celebrated with great fervor and is celebrated over two days. Gifts play an important role during Holi. Holi is a festival of fun, romance and brotherhood. A box of Sweets and Gujjias go in the mood with this fun festival and are one of the most popular gifts of Holi.

Mawlid (Eid Milad un Nabi - Mevlid in Turkish - “Birth of the Prophet”) is a term used to refer to the observance of the birthday of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad which occurs in Rabi' al-awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar. The origins of the observance can be traced back to the Fatimid dynasty in eleventh century Egypt, four centuries after the death of Muhammad as a Shia ruling class festival. The term Mawlid is also used in some parts of the world, such as Egypt, as a generic term for the birthday celebrations of other historical religious figures such as Sufi saints. Mawlid is derived from the Arabic root word, meaning to give birth, bear a child, descendant.

Milad-Un-Nabi is celebrated on the birth anniversary of the Prophet Muhammad, the Last Prophet/Messenger of God of Islam. Sunni Muslims celebrate this Five (5) days earlier to the day on which Shia Muslims celebrate this festival. Shias observe the event on the 17th of the month, coinciding with the birth date of their sixth Imam, Jafar al-Sadiq, while Sunnis observe it on the 12th of the month. As the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar, the corresponding date in the Gregorian calendar varies each year. The earliest accounts for the observance of Mawlid can be found in eighth-century Mecca, when the house in which Muhammad was born was transformed into a place of prayer by Al-Khayzuran, mother of Harun al-Rashid, the fifth and most famous Abbasid caliph. Public celebrations of the birth of Muhammad did not occur until four centuries after his death. It was originally a festival of the Shia ruling class, not attended by the common people, with the first official Mawlid celebrations occurring in Egypt towards the end of the eleventh century. The Fatimids were descendants of Muhammad through his daughter Fatimah.

The early celebrations included elements of Christian and Sufic influence, with animal sacrifices and torchlight processions along with public sermons and a feast. The celebrations occurred during the day, in contrast to modern day observances, with the Fatimid ruler playing a key role in the ceremonies. Emphasis was given to the Ahl al-Bayt (an Arabic phrase literally meaning People of the House, or family) with presentation of sermons and recitations of the Quran. The event also featured the award of gifts to officials in order to bolster support for the ruling caliph.

The first public celebrations by Sunnis took place in twelfth-century Syria, under the rule of Nur ad-Din. The practice spread throughout the Muslim world, assimilating local customs, to places such as Cairo, where folklore and Sufic practices greatly influenced the celebrations. By 1588 it had spread to the court of Murad III, Sultan of the Ottoman empire. In 1910, it was given official status as a national festival throughout the Ottoman empire. Today it is an official holiday in many parts of the world. Among non-Muslim countries, India is noted for its Mawlid festivities. The relics of the Muhammed are displayed after the morning prayers in the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir at Hazratbal shrine, on the outskirts of Srinagar. 'Shab-khawani' night-long prayers held at the Hazratbal shrine are attended by thousands of people.

International Working Women's Day (IWD) is marked on March 8th every year. It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women. It is an occasion for men to express their concern, love and respect to the women around them and in their lives, in a way somewhat similar to Raksha Bandhan, Mother's Day and Valentine's Day.

Started as a political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries (primarily Russia and the countries of former Soviet bloc/a group of countries in special alliance). In some celebrations, the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love to the women around them in a way somewhat similar to Mother's Day and St Valentine's Day mixed together. In others, however, the political and human rights theme as designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner. It is observed by men giving the women in their lives - mothers, wives, girlfriends, daughters, colleagues, etc., flowers and small gifts. In some countries (such as Romania) it is also observed as an equivalent of Mother's Day, where children also give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.

The first IWD was observed on 28th February 1909 in the United States following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America. Among other relevant historic events, it came to commemorate the 1911 ‘Triangle Shirtwaist Factory’ fire. The idea of having an international women's day was first put forward at the turn of the 20th century amid rapid world industrialization and economic expansion that led to protests over working conditions. By urban legend, women from clothing and textile factories staged one such protest on 8th March 1857 in New York City. The garment workers were protesting against very poor working conditions and low wages.

More protests followed on 8th March in subsequent years, most notably in 1908 when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. In 1910 the first international women's conference was held in Copenhagen by the ‘Second International’ and an 'International Women's Day' was established, which was submitted by the important German Socialist Clara Zetkin. The Second International (1889–1916) was an organization of socialist and labour parties formed in Paris on July 14th, 1889. Among the Second International's most famous actions were its (1889) declaration of May 1st as International Workers' Day and its (1910) declaration of March 8th as International Women's Day. It initiated the international campaign for the 8-hour working day. Furthermore, on the eve of World War I, women across Europe held peace rallies on 8th March 1913.

Demonstrations marking International Women's Day in Russia proved to be the first stage of the Russian Revolution of 1917. Following the ‘October Revolution’, the Bolshevik feminist Alexandra Kollontai persuaded Lenin to make it an official holiday in the Soviet Union, and it was established, but was a working day until 1965. On May 8th, 1965 by the decree of the USSR Presidium of the Supreme Soviet, International Women's Day was declared as a non working day in the USSR "in commemoration of outstanding merits of the Soviet women in communistic construction, in the defense of their Motherland during the Great Patriotic War, their heroism and selflessness at the front and in rear, and also marking the big contribution of women to strengthening friendship between peoples and struggle for the peace".

After the collapse of the Soviet Union celebrations of IWD were abandoned in Armenia. Instead April 7th was introduced as state holiday of ‘Beauty and Motherhood’. However, people still kept celebrating IWD on March 8th as well and Public discussion held on the topic of two ‘Women’s Days’ in Armenia resulted in the recognition of the so called ‘Women’s Month’ which is the period between March 8th and April 7th. In Italy, to celebrate the day, men give yellow mimosas to women. Yellow mimosas and chocolate are also one of the most common March 8th presents in Russia. In countries like Portugal and Romania, it is usual, at the night of 8th March, groups of women celebrate in "women-only" dinners and parties. In India, IWD holds a lot of significance. Many celebrations are held during the day. This portrays the power of women in the modern era and how vital their role is in the society. In 1975, which had been designated as International Women’s Year, the United Nations gave official sanction to and began sponsoring International Women's Day.

A very happy and serene, fruitful and divine "Maha Siva Ratri" wishes (23/02/09).

Maha Sivaratri or Sivaratri (Night of Shiva or "Great Night of Shiva") is a festival celebrated every year on the 13th night/14th day in the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) of the month of Maagha (as per Shalivahana) or Phalguna (as per Vikrama) in the Hindu Calendar (the night before and day of the new moon). The festival is principally celebrated by offerings of Bael (Bilva) leaves to the Lord Shiva, all day fasting and an all night long vigil.

During the samudra manthan (the churning of the ocean) by the Gods and Demons, "haalaa-hala", a poison, came out of the ocean. It was so toxic, it could have wiped out the entire creation. At this juncture, on the advice of Lord Vishnu , the gods approached Lord Shiva and prayed to him to protect their lives by consuming this poison. Pleased with their prayers, and out of compassion for living beings, Lord Shiva drank the poison but it was so intense that something was required to cool its effects as his throat became blue. Help was taken from Chandra (Moon God) and a snake was placed around his neck which cooled the effect of the poison and the throat became blue. Thus Lord Shiva is also known as ‘Neelakantha’. During that long period of pralaya (deluge/flood) night, Lord Shiva saved the creation and in remembrance of this saga, and to have his blessings people worship him just as the Gods did, fasting all day and waking all night.

On this day, people worship Lord Shiva wearing 'Rudraksha' and having 'Tripundra' on their body. Tripundra (in Sanskrit, "Three marks") is the Saivite sectarian mark, consisting of three horizontal lines of vibhuti (holy ash) on the brow, often with a dot (bindu) as the third eye. The three lines represent the soul's three bonds: anava, karma and maya. It refers to the three horizontal stripes of holy ash applied to the forehead by worshippers of Lord Shiva. These stripes symbolise spiritual knowledge, purity and penance (spiritual practice of Yoga), so also they represent the three eyes of Lord Shiva. Wearing a rudraksha seed of the rudraksha tree, said to have sprung from the tears of Lord Shiva, when worshipping Lord Shiva is ideal. A rudraksha is reddish in colour with yellow stripes.

On Shivaratri, only cold water and bael leaves are offered to the Linga (sacred shrine of Lord Shiva - There are twelve Jyotirlingas (lingas of light) / sacred shrines of Lord Shiva, and centres for his worship. They are known as "Swayambhus", meaning the lingams sprung up by themselves at these places and temples were built there afterwards). Other traditional offerings, such as bathing it in milk and Panchaamruta (a mixture of milk, curds, ghee, sugar and honey - symbols of sustenance), or annointing it with vermilion (kumkum), turmeric (bright yellow powder) or white consecrated rice (Akshata) (symbols of fertility, or creation), are less done on this day, when Lord Shiva is worshipped as the deity of dissolution.

Valentine's Day or Saint Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14th by many people throughout the world. In the West, it is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other by sending Valentine's cards, presenting flowers, or offering gifts and confectionery.

The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. The holiday is named after two among the numerous Early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The name "Valentine", derived from ‘valens’ (worthy), was popular in late antiquity. Numerous early Christian martyrs were named Valentine. Until 1969, the Catholic Church formally recognized eleven Valentine's Days. The Valentines honored on February 14th are Valentine of Rome and Valentine of Terni. Valentine of Rome was a priest in Rome who suffered martyrdom about AD 269 and was buried on the Via Flaminia. His relics are at the Church of Saint Praxed in Rome and at Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church in Dublin, Ireland. Valentine of Terni became bishop of Interamna (modern Terni) about AD 197 and is said to have been killed during the persecution of Emperor Aurelian. He is also buried on the Via Flaminia, but in a different location than Valentine of Rome. His relics are at the Basilica of Saint Valentine in Terni. The Catholic Encyclopedia also speaks of a third saint named Valentine who was mentioned in early martyrologies under date of February 14th. He was martyred in Africa.

An alternative theory from Belarus states that the holiday originates from the story of Saint Valentine, who upon rejection by his mistress was so heartbroken that he took a knife to his chest and sent her, his still-beating heart as a token of his undying love for her. Hence, heart-shaped cards are now sent as a tribute to his overwhelming passion and suffering. Another appropriate lore has been embroidered in modern times to portray Valentine as a priest who refused an unattested law attributed to the Roman Emperor Claudius II, allegedly ordering that young men remain single. The Emperor supposedly did this to grow his army, believing that married men did not make for good soldiers. The priest Valentine, however, secretly performed marriage ceremonies for young men. When Claudius found out about this, he had Valentine arrested and thrown in jail. In an embellishment to The Golden Legend, on the evening before Valentine was to be executed, he wrote the first "valentine" himself, addressed to a young girl variously identified as his beloved, as the jailer's daughter whom he had befriended and healed or both. It was a note that read "From your Valentine" and since then 'Valentine' became an alternate for 'lover/sweetheart'.

In Japan, Valentine's Day is observed by females who present chocolate gifts (either store-bought or handmade), usually to a male, as an expression of love. The handmade chocolate is usually preferred by the receiver, because it is a sign that the receiving male is the girl's "only one". On White Day, a holiday celebrated on March 14th, one month after Valentine's Day, in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan; the converse happens. Males who received a "honmei-choco" [chocolate of love] or "Giri-choco" [chocolate of courtesy] on Valentine's Day are expected to return the favor by giving gifts. Traditionally, popular White Day gifts are cookies, candies, white chocolate, marshmallows as well as jewelry, lingerie, and stuffed animals. Sometimes the term ‘sanbai gaeshi’ (literally, "thrice the return") is used to describe the generally recited rule that the return gift should be two to three times the cost of the Valentine's gift and usually more expensive.

Black Day, celebrated on April 14th, is a South Korean informal tradition for single/solo people to get together and eat ‘Jajangmyeon’, also spelled Jjajangmyeon, a Korean dish derived from the Chinese dish ‘zhajiang mian’ (wheat noodles with black bean sauce). The idea is that those who didn't give or receive gifts on Valentine's Day or White Day can get together and eat Jjajangmyeon, white Korean noodles with black bean sauce (hence the name), to commiserate their singledom. Valentine's Day has regional traditions in the UK. In Norfolk, a character called 'Jack' Valentine knocks on the rear door of houses leaving sweets and presents for children. In Portugal it is more commonly referred to as "Dia dos Namorados" (Boy/Girlfriend's Day). Valentine's Day is called ‘Sevgililer Gunu’ in Turkey, which translates into "Sweethearts' Day".

The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of love notes in the form of "valentines"; the Modern Valentine symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged ‘Cupid’. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards. The rise of Internet popularity at the turn of the millennium is creating new traditions. Millions of people use, every year, digital means of creating and sending Valentine's Day greeting messages such as e-cards, love coupons or printable greeting cards, expressing ‘Love’.

A very Happy and Honoring Republic Day wishes (26/01/09).

The Republic Day of India is a national holiday of India to mark the adoption of the Constitution of India and the transition of India from a British Dominion to a republic on January 26, 1950. It is one of the three national holidays (Republic Day/Jan 26, Independence Day/Aug 15 and Gandhi Jayanti/Oct 2) in India. Although India obtained its independence on August 15, 1947, the Constitution of India came into effect only on January 26, 1950. During the transition period from 1947 to 1950, King George VI was the head of country. Dr. C. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji) served as the Governor-General of India during this period. Following January 26, 1950, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was elected as the president of India.

To mark the importance of this occasion, every year a grand parade is held in the capital, New Delhi, from the Raisina Hill near the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President's Palace), along the Rajpath, past India Gate and on to the historic Red Fort. The different regiments of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force march past in all their finery and official decorations. The President of India who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, takes the salute. Parades demonstrating the cultures of the various states and regions of India are also held and broadcast nationwide on television. The parade also includes vibrant displays and floats and traditionally ends with a fly-past by Indian Air Force jets in a Tri-color (Tiranga) formation.

Celebrations are also held in state capitals, where the governor of the state unfurls the national flag. If the Governor of the state is unwell, or is unavailable for some reason, the Chief Minister of the state assumes the honor of unfurling the National Flag of India. India hosts another Head of State (President or Prime Minister of another Country) as the chief guest on this day marking the strategic importance of the association of that nation with India.

It is also ‘Australia Day’ today (26/01). Australia Day, also known as Anniversary Day, Foundation Day and Invasion Day, is the official national day of Australia and has been an official public holiday since 1994. Celebrated annually on 26th January, the day commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, marking the start of British colonisation of Australia. Australia Day is an official public holiday in every state and territory of Australia, and is marked by the Order of Australia and Australian of the Year awards, along with an address from the Prime Minister. Records of the celebration of Australia Day date back to 1808, with Governor Lachlan Macquarie having held the first official celebration of Australia Day in 1818.

On 13th May 1787, a fleet of 11 ships, which came to be known as the First Fleet, was sent by the British Admiralty from England to Australia. Under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip, the fleet sought to establish a penal colony at Botany Bay on the coast of New South Wales, which had been explored by Captain James Cook in 1770. The fleet was at anchor in Sydney Cove by 26th January 1788 and the flag was raised in the name of King George III. People observe Family meetings, parades, citizenship ceremonies as Australia Day celebrations and conduct functions across the country.

A very happy, colourful and joyful bhogi, sankranti/pongal/lohri, kanuma wishes (14/01/09).

Sankranthi, or Makara Sankranti is a festival that signifies the beginning of the harvest season for the farmers of Indian Sub-Continent. This is a harvest festival celebrated not only all over India but other South East Asian Countries as well. Makara Sankranti has special geo-agri-economical significance to people of Indian Sub-Continent. Makara Sankranti is about transition of Sun into Capricorn on its celestial path (Sankranti in Sanskrit means transition). This is significant considering Winter Solstice (either of the two times of the year when the sun is at its greatest distance from the celestial equator) marking gradual increase of duration of day.

The day on which the sun begins its journey northwards is referred to as Makara Sankranti. Sankramana means "to commence movement" and hence the name Makara Sankranti given to one of the largest, most auspicious, but varied festivals in the Indian subcontinent. It usually falls in the middle of January (Jan 14th). Because of the geography and size of India, this festival is celebrated for innumerable reasons depending on the climate, agricultural environment, cultural background and position in the context of north or south of India. Makara Sankranti is also to honour, worship and to pay respect to the word mother, Saraswati Maata (Goddess of Knowledge). At the start of this significant event, there is also worship for the departed ancestors. The period is also considered an ideal time for aspirants to satisfy "the goals of life".

Sankranthi is a three day festival in general. The first day of festival is Bhogi. At dawn people light up a bonfire with several old articles in their house. The second day is Sankranti, the big festival, when everyone wears new clothes and pray to their favourite God by offering them sweets. The third day is Kanuma, which is also considered a major part of sankranti lacking the pompousness associated with makara, is celebrated by cleaning and praying the equipment used by the household ranging from weapons to utensils. Very significant however, the day preceding Makara Sankranti, called Bhogi is when people discard old and derelict things and concentrate on new things causing change or transformation. Sweets in generous quantities are prepared and distributed. Very important though, cooking is done by women on this occasion. Families are joined together for this occasion without fail. Brothers pay special tribute to their married sisters by giving gifts as affirmation of their filial love. The landlord gives gifts of food, clothes and money to their workforce. On the day after Makara Sankranti, known as Kanuma, the animal kingdom is remembered and in particular, the cows. Young girls feed the animals, birds and fishes as a symbol of sharing.

Makara Sankranthi also happens to be the day on which Bhishma, the grand sire of Pandavas and Kauravas from the epic Mahabharata voluntarily left his mortal coil. Sankranti is celebrated all over Southeast Asia with some regional variations and different names but with same significance and great devotion. In North India it is called Lohri/Maghi (Punjab & HP), in Eastern India it is called Bihu/Bhogali Bihu (Assam & Bihar), in Western India it is called Uttarayan (Gujarat & Rajasthan) and in South India it is called Makara Sankranti (AP)/Sankranthi (Karnataka)/Pongal (Tamilnadu)/Makara Vilakku (Kerala).

It is celebrated in almost every village with adventurous games in South India. Whether it is the cock fights in Andhra Pradesh, Bull fighting in Tamil Nadu or Elephant Mela in Kerala, there is huge amount of betting done however, the so called tradition continues to play a major role in the festival. Another notable feature of the festival in South India is the Haridas who moves around asking for rice and wishing luck to the household. Rangoli competitions too are a common sight. The entire month from mid-December to Sankranthi is celebrated with giant rangolis in front of the house which are drawn only at late night for the entire month. For all other days of the year, rangoli is typically drawn in mornings only. Every village and town in the province is decorated with drawings. The colorful drawings or Rangoli (also known as Muggu), are usually found in front of the houses. Woman enjoy making these drawings and every day/year they try to outdo themselves. Flying kites is another important part of the festival. There is even a competition of kite flying. In the rural and coastal areas, cock fights are held and is a prominent event of the festival.

Many Melas or fairs are held on Makara Sankranti the most famous being the Kumbh Mela, held once in every 12 years at one of four holy locations, namely Haridwar, Prayag/Allahabad, Ujjain and Nashik and the Magh Mela (or mini-Kumbh Mela held annually at Prayag) and the Gangasagar Mela (held at the head of the Ganges River, where it flows into the Bay of Bengal). Makara Sankranti is celebrated in Kerala at Sabarimala where the Makara Jyothi is visible followed by the Makara Vilakku celebrations. Makara Sankranti is the day when the Sun God begins his ascendancy and entry into the Northern Hemisphere. Sun for Hindus stands for Pratyaksha Brahman - the manifest God, who symbolizes, the one, non-dual, self-effulgent, glorious divinity blessing one and all tirelessly. Sun is the one who transcends time and also the one who rotates the proverbial wheel of time. The famous Gayatri Mantra, which is chanted everyday by every faithful Hindu, is directed to Sun God to bless them with intelligence and wisdom. Sun not only represents God but also stands for an embodiment of knowledge and wisdom. Thus, this event becomes an important spiritual, religious and cultural event in India.

విను వీధిన వెండి వెన్నెల
పరుండి చూసిన ఇసుక తిన్నెల
కొండ దారిన కన్నె వాగు గలగల
ఆహ్లాదపరుచు చిన్ని పక్షుల కిలకిల
ప్రకృతిలోని పలు వన్నె చిన్నెల
వర్ణ వర్ణనము చేయు వేళల

Hello All,

Just a weird thought had me pen this down.
It might sound bad and portray me mad,
making someone sad and no one might be glad!!!
Well, I feel there is a meaning in these words and here with a leaning, it goes....

What will happen, when I die…
Do people weep or do they cry?
Do they see my body getting fry?
Do they see my blood getting dry?

Do they see my body becoming a paste?
Do they see it being dumped into a waste?
For the kites and vultures to have a taste...

Do they feel bad about my death?
Do they see me getting buried in the earth?
My body getting at-last, a permanent berth...

Why should I mull over all these things?
When it does not matter after my final bell rings...
Or does it…and do I see what’s next, with wings!!!

Is there something really called as soul?
Or is it only a fiction, unreal and foul?
Which is out of the rational bowl...

Science says there are no signs of it...
Shastras say we have to believe it!!!
But after death, do I really care for it?

When my five sense organs,
Fuse into the five elements...
Would I think, what else remains?

Hence I ask, why should I-
think; what will happen, when I die…

Teachers’ day in India is celebrated on September 5th of every year to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was the first Vice President of India (1952-1962), and the second President of India (1962-1967). When he became President, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, September 5th. He replied, "Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if 5th September is observed as Teachers' Day."

His birthday has since been celebrated as Teachers' Day in India. Teachers’ day is also celebrated in various other countries across the world on various dates, a day which is intended to be a special day for the appreciation of teachers. Also, World Teachers' Day is held annually on 5th October since 1994 to commemorate teachers’ organizations worldwide.

On this day, students show their appreciation to the teachers by wishing them and presenting the gifts including cards and flowers.

Parents' Day is a holiday similar to a combination of Father's Day and Mother's Day.

Parents' Day is celebrated on the fourth (4th) Sunday of July, every year. This was established in 1994 when President Bill Clinton signed a Congressional Resolution into law (36 U.S.C. & 135) for "recognizing, uplifting, and supporting the role of parents in the rearing of children".

It is celebrated on different days in various countries. In the United States (and most part of the world), Parents' Day is held on the fourth Sunday of every July. In the Republic of Korea, Parents' Day is celebrated on May 8. In Vietnam, Parents' Day is held on July 7.

Father's Day is a secular celebration inaugurated in the early twentieth century to complement Mother's Day, in celebrating fatherhood and male parenting, and to honor and commemorate fathers and forefathers. Father's Day celebration typically involves gift-giving to fathers and family-oriented activities. It falls on the third (3rd) Sunday of June, every year.

The driving force behind the establishment of the integration of Father's Day was Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd, born in Creston, Washington. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, as a single parent reared his six children in Spokane, Washington. She was inspired by Anna Jarvis's efforts to establish Mother's Day. Although she initially suggested June 5, the anniversary of her father's death, she did not provide the organizers with enough time to make arrangements, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June and thus being followed on every third Sunday of June each year. The first June Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, WA.

Mother's Day is a day honoring mothers, celebrating motherhood generally and the positive contributions of mothers to the society. It falls on the second (2nd) Sunday of May, every year. It is the result of a campaign by Anna Marie Jarvis (1864-1948), who, following the death of her mother on May 9, 1905, devoted her life to establishing Mother's Day as a national, and later an international, holiday.

However, the first known observance of Mother's Day in the U.S. occurred in Albion, Michigan, on May 13, 1877, the second Sunday of the month and known to be followed each year to pay tribute to every mother.

God created every one and all

Ugadi means, 'yuga' / era + 'aadi' / beginning; the start of an era. This is the new year's day for the people of the Deccan region of India. While the people of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka use the term ‘Ugadi’ for this festival, the people of Maharashtra term the same festival, observed on the same day, ‘Gudi Padwa’. Sindhis, people from Sindh, celebrate the same day as their New Year day ‘Cheti Chand’. In Punjab and Haryana, for Sikhs, it is ‘Baisakhi’ (originally Vaishakhi); in Kerala it is called as ‘Vishu’; in Assam this day is called ‘Bihu’ and in Tamil Nadu it is celebrated as ‘Puthandu’. Also, as ‘Poila Boishakh’ in both Bangladesh and West Bengal, as well as by people in Tripura.

It is an ancient harvest festival in many regions, which also marks beginning of a new year, and new harvest season.

సృష్టిలో 'స్త్రీ' పాత్ర విశిష్ఠమైనది. ఒక బుల్లిగా, చెల్లిగా, సిరిమల్లిగా, నెచ్చెలిగా, ఆలిగా, కాళిగా, తల్లిగా తన ప్రతి రూపం; అపురూపం, అద్వితీయం. పది నెలలు తన కడుపున మోసి మరో ప్రాణికి తన ప్రాణం సైతం పణంగా పెట్టి ప్రాణం పోసే పడతికి పలుమార్లు ప్రణమిల్లుతూ అందిస్తున్న నీరాజనం, ఈ "పరిణీత"కు నిర్వచనం....

తల్లి కడుపులో నృత్యం చేసే పసిపాప
తల్లిదండ్రులకు అత్యంత విలువైన కనుపాప
బారసాలకు ఊయలలో పాలబుగ్గల చిన్నారి
పెళ్ళినాడు పూలబుట్టలో సిగ్గుమొగ్గల వయ్యారి
మంటపాన బెల్లం, జీలకర్రతో సింగారించుకునే జవ్వని
తాళికట్టు శుభవేళ తలను వంచే తరుణీమణి
తలంబ్రాల తంతులో తలదన్నే ధీర సాహసనారి
తల్లి కాబోవువేళ తన్మయత్వంతో తల్లడిల్లే సుకుమారి
ఒడిలో బిడ్డను జోలతో ఓలలాడించే వనిత
పరిపూర్ణమైన అతివకు ప్రతీక, "పరిణీత"...!

This is about a relation. Any relation stands firm only on the base of faith. ఒక బంధం ఏర్పడటానికి రెండు మనసులు కావాలి. ఆ బంధం బలపడటానికి ఒకరిపై ఒకరికి నమ్మకం ఉండాలి. ఎందుకంటే, ఎటువంటి బంధమైనా అందుకు పునాది నమ్మకం; అదిలేనిదే నడవదు లోకంలో ఏ కొనుగోలు, అమ్మకం...

ఇద్దరి మధ్యన బంధం, ఇగిరి పోని గంధం...
అరిగిపోయే సబ్బులా, కరిగిపోయే మబ్బులా
తరిగిపోయే డబ్బులా, పెరిగిపోయే జబ్బులా కాదు..!

వెలిగే కాంతిలా, తొలిగే భ్రాంతిలా
కలిగే శాంతిలా, రగిలే క్రాంతిలా ఉండాలి...

బంధం యొక్క....
పునాదులు అరిగిపోకూడదు
కన్నకలలు కరిగిపోకూడదు
ఆనందపు అలలు తరిగిపోకూడదు
అలకలు, కలతలు పెరిగిపోకూడదు.

ఒక బంధం....
నిజమైన కాంతిలా వెలగాలి

మనిషికి వరం కళ్ళు రెండు, కానీ వాటి చూపులో అర్థాలు మెండు
చెవులకు శక్తి వినికిడి, అవి తెలుపుతాయి ప్రతి చిన్న అలికిడి
మాటలకు ఆధారం నోరు, మనసులో భావాలకు అదేకదా డోరు
ముఖానికి అందం నాసిక, పసికడుతుంది ప్రతి వాసన యొక్క పుట్టుక
అన్నింటికీ తామే అంటాయి చేతులు, ప్రతిఫలిస్తాయి వాటిలో మన చేతలు
ముందుండి నడిపిస్తాయి నిండైన కాళ్ళు, దాటిస్తాయి దారిలోని నీళ్ళు, రాళ్ళు
ఆలోచనల పుట్ట మన మస్తిష్కం, మంచి ఆలోచనలకు ఉండాలి సదా వెల్కం
అన్నింటికీ మూలం నాడీ వ్యవస్థ, అది లేనిదే మనిషికి అంతా అవస్థ
విచిత్రమైనది ఆ దేవుని సృష్టి, అది నిలుపుకోవడానికి కావాలి కండపుష్టి
కష్టించి పనిచేయాలి ప్రతి మనిషి, నష్టాలులేక లాభాలతో పొందాలి ఖుషి..!

ప్రతి మనిషికి జీవితంలో ఏదో సాధించాలని, ఎన్నో సంపాదించాలని ఆశ, ఆకాంక్ష ఉంటాయి. కాని,
జీవన చరమాంకంలో మనకు మిగిలే నిజమైన ఆస్తి;
కాలగమన చెరను వీడిన మన దేహాన్ని మోసే "ఆ నలుగురి" దోస్తి.
దానికి పెట్టుబడి మన మంచితనం, మచ్చలేని మస్తి.
అవి లేని ఆత్మకు దివిలో నరకమే తగిన శాస్తి......
దీని గురించి తెలిపే చిన్న ప్రయత్నమే ఈ "నభూతో నభవిష్యతి"...

జబ్బు పడ్డవేళ, డబ్బు ఎంత ఉన్నా ఉండదు ఆనందం
నా అనువారు లేని చోట, నాదను ఆస్తి ఎంత దాచినా లేదు లాభం
జబ్బు ముదిరి ప్రాణం మీదకు వస్తే, ఎంత డబ్బున్ననూ నిరుపయోగం
నా అనువారిని సంపాదించని జీవితాన, నాదని సంపాదించినదంతా నిష్ఫలం
అందుకే ఓ మనిషీ తెలుసుకో
తెలుసుకొని నేర్పుగా మసలుకో
మంచితనంతో నలుగురు మనుషులను సంపాదించుకో
మంచి వ్యక్తిగా నలుగురిలో మన్ననలు అందుకో
మన మంచితనం, మాయని స్నేహం ఇవే నిజమైన ఆస్తి

This is about the perfect match for every person in life. ప్రతి మనిషి జీవితంలో మనువు ఒక మలుపు. కాని; అది మేలుమలుపు కావాలన్నా, జీవితాన మలిగెలుపు రావాలన్నా; మన గూడు చేరిన తోడు, కావాలి ఒక సరిజోడు. అపార్థాలకు అతీతంగా, అనర్థాలకు దూరంగా, అన్నింటినీ అర్థంచేసుకునే, అవసరానికి సర్దుకునే, మనువాడి మన తనువులో తను ఐక్యమై, అర్థభాగమై సదా నిలిచే తోడు - సరిజోడు. అటువంటి సరిజోడు గురించి ఈ పదకేళి, అటువంటి వారికి అందిస్తున్న పద నివాళి...

తోడు కరువై, కడుపు చెరువై

This is about dreams unlimited. కలలు అనంతం, అన్నింటికీ అతీతం. పొట్టివాడు, పొట్టవాడు, నల్లవాడు, తెల్లవాడు, ఎవరైనా సరే; కలల లోకంలో ఎవరికి వారే రారాజులు. వాస్తవ పరిస్థితులు ఎలా ఉన్నా, వాయువు మనకు అనుకూలంగా వీయకున్నా, మనదైన స్వప్నలోకంలో; సర్వం మనకు అనుకూలం, మనస్తాపం ఆమడ దూరం. కలలలో ఏదైనా సంభవమే, కమ్మనైనా అనుభవమే; కమ్ముకున్న కలికాలపు కష్ట, నష్టాలకు, దుష్ట దుఃఖాలకు కాసేపు దూరం కావడమే కలలకు ప్రాణం; అలసిన మనసును ఉత్తేజపరిచే కారణం, నిజం కాకపోయినా తరిగిపోని ఖనిజం...స్వప్నం. అటువంటి ఒక కల, ప్రాణం పోసుకుంది ఇలా....

తేనె చంద్రమా, తీపి సంద్రమా
చేతికి అందుమా, అంతులేని అందమా
సంగీతంలో గీతమా, రాగానుబంధమా
సందిట చేరుమా, అనురాగ బంధమా
ఏకాంతవేళలో శరత్తులో నవమి
చెంతనుండువేళ వసంత పంచమి
చెరిసగమైనవేళ జీవితం నిండు పున్నమి
సరిలేని గ్రీష్మ శిశిరాల అద్భుత కలిమి

'స్త్రీ'కి పర్యాయపదాలు; అతివ, వనిత, తరుణి, పడతి, కోమలి, ఇంకా ఎన్నో ఉన్నాయి. స్త్రీలను "కోమలి" అని అంటారు, కారణం వారు కోమలంగా/సుకుమారంగా ఉంటారని. అలాగే పువ్వులు కూడా సుకుమారమైనవి. ఫూలలో ఎన్నో రకాలున్నా అవన్నీ కూడా వేటికవి (వర్ణంలో, వాసనలో, వాడుకలో) వైవిధ్యాన్ని కలిగి ఉంటాయి. అలాంటి సుకుమారమైన పువ్వులను ఒక సుకుమారిని పోల్చడానికి ఉపమానాలుగా ఉపయోగిస్తే బాగుంటుందన్న ఆలోచన... ఈ కవితకు ప్రాణం మరియు ప్రేరణ. ఇందులో పది రకాల పువ్వులతో ఒక పడతి గుణాలను పోల్చి పుష్పాంజలితో అంకితం ఇచ్చాను, ఇలా....

గులాబీ ఛాయతో చెక్కిలి
మనసు మాయని సిరిమల్లి
తన నుదుటి సింధూరం
వికసించిన ఎర్ర మందారం

నాసిక సంపెంగ పువ్వంట
నయనాలు కలువ రేకుల జంట
ఇంతి వంటి నిగారింపు
బంతి, చామంతిల మేళవింపు

మొగలి సుమం తన పరిమళం
జఘన వయ్యారం నందివర్ధనం
తన తనువు నందనందనం
అణువణువు పుష్పాంగం
సుమ సుకుమారికి ఈ గీతం
సుమాంజలితో అంకితం....

చీకటిలో చిరుదివ్వెలా
చిగురించిన మల్లెపువ్వులా
చెరగని చిరునవ్వులా
చలిమిడి ముద్ద బువ్వలా

జీవితంలో....
నిశీధిని నిర్మూలించి
ఆశలని గుబాళించి
ఆనందాన్ని ప్రతిఫలించి
ఆకలిని అమ్మలా తీర్చి

దరిని చేరావు, మదిన దూరావు
సరిజోడువై మేలు దారిని చూపావు
కరిమబ్బులు వీడిన నీలాల నింగిలో
సిరివెన్నెల వెలుగై వెంట నిలిచావు....
